Margaret & her Box Brownie Camera, Grange Road, Thornaby

t14593I took this photograph of Margaret Hope standing on Grange Road, Thornaby when she was about eight or nine, I don’t know whether she took one of me as we both had Box Brownie Cameras for either birthdays or Christmas. The films only took eight photos and were quite expensive at the time, I think I only ever had two films. I also had a flash attachment, my uncle Bob Huggins showed me how to develop them, but we never had the money to go on with this hobby.

  1. This delightful photo of past innocence and simplicity features in a new book by Derek Smith, I attended the release of the book at Thornaby Library in the pavilion on Thursday evening 21st November 2019.

The book is an excellent collection of photos and personal memories of Thornaby, many of the photos are from family albums and have never had a public airing before.

If you have an interest in Thornaby or general social history then this book is for you.

The book was commissioned by Thornaby Town Council and there are a limited number of copies, the library at Thornaby will be able to give more details if you are interested.

  2. I went to St Patrick’s primary School with Margaret Hope from Grange Road. We were good friends. I lived in St Paul’s Road. Did Margaret Hope emigrate to Australia? My name was Heslop too but I don’t think you and I are related.

    • She did go to Australia. So did her brother and sister. She’s been married for donkey’s years and as far as I know has been very happy.
