The first photograph shows my great grandparents, William Wylie Brand and his wife Rosehannah, they ran the Waverley dining rooms within the Waverly Hotel on Stockton High Street during the 1890s.
The other two photographs are of a gentleman who’s identity I am curious about. I don’t know when they were taken or where but possibly around about the turn of the century. Any help would be much appreciated.

I remember in the very early 70s, a lady with a round face and round glasses who I think was called Margaret, used to run over to fetch the market traders cups of tea in white, plastic cups. Do you remember her? And was the Waverley upstairs?
I remember the Waverly cafe, think Mrs Scollett ran it. They did great hot meat buns with stuffing. They were delicious especially on a cold winters morning…when working on the market…
My gran, Annie Brand, (later Annie Davidson) nee Myers, worked in the Waverley in the 20s and 30s. There was another Annie, Annie Ross who we think was the manager. My gran was good friends with the Pacitto (ice cream family) right up to her death in 1972.
Older son was Steve and daughter was (my mother) Olive.
My grandfather, Thomas William Brand, son of William Wylie Brand, was born 1888 and died in 1928. He and his wife were definitely working in the Waverley before his death. My gran (Annie) died in 1972 at the age of 80/81. Are you a Brand yourself?
No I’m not a Brand, but I have some great memories of Stockton market and the Waverley… Sadly the town is no longer the town it was…
So, this is why Lily Brand named her house The Waverly.
Which of William Wylie Brand’s many children are you descended from? My brother and I are his great grandchildren via his 4th son George.
Didn’t have a different name in the 1960s
Are John and Olive Shields the parents of Chris Shields..?
Yes indeed… Must get in touch.
My uncle Harold Brand and his wife Nancy had the Theatre pub (Jockers) in the late fifties not sure if it is the same family.
What town was that in? Sunderland?
Stockton-on-Tees
William Wylie Brand’s second son was Harold so likely the same family.
The Waverley Cafe I remember as a boy around 1968 working on Stockton market on Saturdays. My job at lunchtime was to put the sandwich & tea order in and take it back to the stall. If I remember correctly it was run at the time by a lady known as Ma Scollett. They made the best egg & bacon sandwich I have ever tasted. Other food was also tops. The good old days for sure.
