Wow, one of them was actually called Alf Heart? Now that is unfortunate !
Was this picture taken prior to the opening of the training school on Belasis?, if so where was it taken……
Picture was taken by the West Gate while we were at messenger boy training, which also took place around that area, I did 12 months in the Oil Works lab afterwards, then started basic training the following year at the training school on Belasis Ave (opposite the main gate by the Ammonia Works)
I also had my first introduction to ICI as a messenger boy at Billingham, we spent three days in the school on Belasis Ave prior to being shipped out to site. It was a bustling hive of industry back then, like a town in its own right…buses lined up in droves to take everyone home in the evening…those who didn’t travel by bike of course, and the pasty’s served in the canteens where the stuff of legend!
