  1. I was at Billingham Tech from 1963-65 and these photos capture the time perfectly.
    Thanks for sharing Bill.

  2. I first saw the modern Billingham town center when I was about 13 or 14 years old having lived in Norton and only tended to visit Stockton. If I remember right there were ponds and an aviary in the centre surrounded by two levels of shops, three residential tower blocks, a nightclub ( Laronde??) and the Forum. I was seriously impressed to say the least because it looked so modern compared with Stockton. My friend Sally and I used to often walk from Norton to Billingham town center via the bottoms and up past Billingham motors. I vaguely remember going up to the roof of the tower block to have a look at the area and was surprised to see people had put washing lines for laundry on the roof. It was a fine facility in its day but it appears to have been allowed to decline in later years. I also remember visiting the International Folklore Festival there and that was a riot of culture, music, colour, dancing and international visitors. Billingham was probably the most vibrant town center in the north circa 1971 ish.
