Street near the Old Stockton Gasworks

This picture is from one of the streets near the old gasworks, which have all disappeared. It may be one which leads up to Prossers Bridge. All the little industries have gone too, but you will see the sign for Stockton Pattern Makers. I think the chimney in the background is on a waste incineration site.

  1. This location isn’t near the Prosser’s (Gas Works/House) Bridge. The bridge was accessed from Ford Street, which is at least a 500m walk along several streets from where this photo was taken.

  2. Yes that is the picture of the council yard and incinerator , they burnt some waste there plus the bodies of dead animals .The street did lead to the footbridge. I once went to school organised tour of the gas works it was fascinating , the coaking beds producing the town gas .

    • This road did not lead to the footbridge, Ford Street led to the bridge, Thompson St. led into the Gasworks Main Gate, I lived in the area.

  3. I’m sure this is Fenwick Street, and this building was once used by Head Wrightson’s for the purpose of training Apprentices. The street behind was I believe to be Railway Street.

  4. Thanks Fred. I remember pushing a old pram to collect Coke for a neighbour. I was paid 3 pence. Enough to go to the Globe for the Minors.

    • Straight down middle is downings iron foundry, I served my time there as apprentice moulder, great place to learn your trade with even greater lads to work alongside, just behind foundry was the corporation yard, few lads I grew up with worked corporation (before council) I used to climb up on our roof and shout down to lads before they went out to work. There was only one pattern maker working at downings during 60s, a lovely chap called Ray, never knew his surname.
What foundry to work in, work was hard and dangerous but buy did I have some laughs.
      All the best.
      Derek.
