  1. Dear Keith [Thompson],

John Mash [Hartburn] was in our class but not mentioned on the plan. I lived near to him. I would say he is No. 4 …. in white top. First names of two are as follows: No. 26 = Roger Kidd [Oxbridge Lane] and No. 42 = David Smiles [Eaglescliffe]

    David Williams
    [No. 32]

  2. Hello LLewellyn
This was J4 (Standard 4) and our class teacher was Mr. Byrne. This would have been taken just before most of us left and went to either Stockton Grammar or Grangefield.

  3. Which class was this, please? At end of school year1954 I was in S4 and left a week before the end of the term, as we were moving to London; thus regetting not receving my annual book prize for being top in English. I did visit the school in 1963 when touring with Ruby Murray in Snow White and playing the poor old Hippodrome again. This satisfied two objectives. Firstly, pleased to have a chat with S1 master, Mr Thompson for whom I had great respect. Amused (as when a child one doesn’t necessarily think of teachers as having these kind of personal feelings) when he said “Oh, Ruby Murray! I used to have a big crush on her!” Secondly, in order to prove to my satisfaction that Mr Nesbitt epitomised what the old Chief Constable of Tynemouth (‘down the mines’ at 12 year of age and then moving on and working his way up to that position) referred to as ‘Men amongst boys and Boys amongst Men.’ Sadly, two major incidents had proved to myself and my parents that Nesbitt was had little in the way of a ‘balanced outlook’ and was a man for whom the truth was not first priority. On this occasion, from the gloom of the corridor outside his office, I watched him, in his gown, strutting the playground during the break like a Pouter Pigeon and then physically shrink when entering the corridor and meeting me. Don’t anyone try to tell me that revenge is not sweet.
Wellthentherenow! A little carried away with memories of ‘Cock’ Salmon’ ( who had previously taught my father) Campbell ( some stories about that one!) and Mr Parker, who was a good and honourable Woodwork teacher – for whom in retrospect, a few years later when our naive generation were learning about life, I felt rather sorry.

    • Hello Keith,

What a lovely surprise. I am No. 32 [David Williams] and No. 33 is Graham Benzies. Will look at photo again when I have some spare time.

      Best wishes,

      Dave Williams.
