  1. Long time ago Denis I was playing for Newham Grange at that time but could not remember who won what that year, I could not recognise any of your team except yourself and Burdon the goalkeeper who played in the Stockton Boys team captained by Barry Butler in 1949. The rest of the team was Big Harold Atkinson Right back Bailey street, Eddie Dunne left back Oxbridge. Les Mitchel right half Newham Grange, Barry Butler Richard Hind Centre Half, then was it you at left half? I do not know who was at outside right maybe Anon can help, Jimmy Johnson Bailey Street at inside right Talla Taylor Richard Hind at Centre forward, Stacka Denham Richard Hind at inside left, Benny Brown Newham Grange Outside left, this team lost the Final of the Hartlepool Hospital Cup to Bishop Auckland after beating the Boro 3-2 after extra time after they were 2-0 down with 2 minutes to go earlier in the season. Happy memories

      • Hi Mike yes your Dad John Duffy played in the Stockton Boys team I was lucky enough to Captain in 1949/50 season he formed a very good part of our defense partnering Edgar Fellows The Richard Hind Captain as one of our full backs. I THINK HE MAY HAVE BEEN CAPTAIN OF THE ST BEDES TEAM THAT YEAR.

          • Edgar Fellows played one game for Stockton in the Midland league at South Shields and I asked him after the match what he thought about the game Too B!@$%^ fast for me and never played another game for Stockton. Big Harold Atkinson came out to South Africa while I was playing for Vereeniging Athletic in the South African Professional league, I convinced him to to join our Club as an Amateur and he had three very successful seasons with us, when we won the National Second Division Title. Both great local footballer, who are no longer with us.

            • South Shields were a good team in those days playing at Simonside with ex Newcastle Utd & Scottish League players in their side & good crowds.

              • Yes Len both Shields teams featured many ex top level footballers both from England and Scotland in their Teams. As did many other teams in the Midland League. I remember playing in a game against North Shields with Big Frank Brennan the ex Newcastle Centre half in The North Shields Team at the Victoria Ground Stockton, a real gentleman footballer Big and tough but very fair in his play, no snide fouls from Frank

                • The Stockton lad Alan Monkhouse ex Newcastle Utd. played for South Shields, he was that fast he run in the Powderhall the 100 yards race for professional sportsmen, he could do even time 10 seconds.
