Hi, I am trying to trace or find any information of someone who lived in our house, 3 Milner Road, Norton. He has an unsual name of Lucky Nobbs, this name is displayed on death certificate, he died in 1935, he had a sister which shows on certificate, T. Thomas, if anyone has any information on this gentleman I would love to know, in particular his name.
Hi Jamie, Lucky Nobbs was not his nickname, it was the name that he was registered with at birth. The names of his brothers and sisters are quite ordinary in comparison. The records suggest that he was born at the Moulders Arms, in Elswick, Newcastle, where his mother Susan Nobbs was the Landlord.
He was born in 1877 and appears to have remained single all his life.
By 1921 he was lodging at 3 Milner Road, Norton, the home of George and Ella Dickinson. The records show that he worked at Dorman Long’s Steel Mill in Middlesbrough. His address was still 3 Milner Road on his death certificate in 1935.
Thanks Cliff , yes I did find this Information, it’s where I live now , such an unusual name I was hoping he would have some descendants who knew about him or even a photo , but with the age I guess people will have died now .
Hi
So I’m looking to find someone by the name of M Stoker. Daughter of the late Charles and Doreen stoker. Lived in the Lawson street /Webster street area of Stockton in the 40’s /early 50s. Any information greatly appreciated
Thanks
What number Lawson Street?
Hi Victoria, Maureen Stoker was born in Stockton in 1946 to Charles and Doreen Stoker who had married in 1943. There is a possibility that Maureen’s mother died in 1948.
What number Lawson Street?
Sorry, I do not have access to the records which would answer your question.
Hi everyone, I would love to see if anyone has any pictures or stories of my nanna (Ann Hart born in 1941) or my grandad (John Pinkney born in 1936) or any pictures or memories of my great aunties bakery (Marion’s Bakery). Thank you, Hannah
Hi does anyone remember Kenneth Sleights and Joan? They lived in the Groves around around 1970s. They had three children Sharon, Mark and Julie.
Hi I’m trying to find my dad Thomas Almond born 1899 in Thornaby
Two pieces of information for you. The 1921 Census was filled in to show that he was living at home (34 Gladstone Street, Thornaby) with his parents. But the enumerator appears to have deleted his entry as it shows that he was “declared unfit for work” and was in a hospital. But I have not been able to find which hospital. His wife (Olwen) appears in the 1939 Survey living in Redcar. She is listed as married and not as a widow, which suggests that her husband was still alive, but I cannot locate him.
Hi Folks
Not sure if you can help? I lived in 1 Hartburn Lane and also next door, I think it was 4 Hartburn Lane in Stockton around late 1970s or maybe very early 80s. Does anyone know of anyone else who did. I can only remember one other resident of 4 Hartburn Lane…Susan was a big girl and profoundly deaf. Maybe this little detail will help?
The other residents in 1 Hartburn Lane were a mixed group of girls and boys in late teens at the time (one of the girls was a born again Christian)…can’t remember her name, but she used to go to the Stockton Apostolic Church and played in the band.
Also does anyone know of any ex-residents of the Children’s home in Windsor Road from around the same time or slightly earlier?
I now live in Australia. Been here since late 80s.
Kind regards
David Bull
We used to live at no 14 Hartburn lane – must have been from about 1959 to about 1974. There was a bus stop outside our house, very handy to get back from the town after shopping. I remember lots from those days. We gave all our old toys to the children’s home ? No 1. Used both corner shops a lot over the years. Ropner park was a great play to go. Cheers. Veronica.
I was born at 8 Hartburn Lane. From Yarm Road even No/.houses on left, and odd No. ones on right. No. 1 was owned by the Cohen family. No. 2 was Mr Pickles, No. 4 was Isabella Williams, No. 6 was Mrs Hibbs, who moved to Tunbridge Wells when her husband died [1950’s] and the Harrison’s moved in. No. 10 was Mr. & Mrs. Wright. No. 12 ????, No. 14 or 16 was Mr Dent and No. 16 or 14 was Mr & Mrs Richardson. No. 18 was WC Wilson who was General Manager of Stockton Corporation buses [bus garage in Bridge Road].
Trying to contact the owner of the Kirk Family Tree on Ancestry that has links to the Lenham family of Stockton-on-Tees.
Hi, my father’s mother was a Kirk, i think they were from headingly, yorkshire, wonder if they are same kirks?.
all the best.
Derek Casey.
Hi Derek, any relation to James Casey?
James Casey is my 2x great grandfather, the christian name James is well used, my Casey ancestors came from Co Monaghan Ireland.
May I ask why you mentioned James Casey?
Derek
I’m trying to untangle the Casey’s from Jeremiah to the present day.
Should mention the the comedian James Casey, I was always told that he was my our relative but I never found any proof that he was, his Casey’s lived in Portrack.
Derek.
Just wondering if the Kirk family you can view on ancestry show they were Yorkshire people from Headingly.
My early Kirks worked on early railway and big houses.
all the best.
Derek.
No idea Derek as I cannot view said tree.
I’ve heard that a member of the Lenham family of Stockton was a cricketer of some distinction with a county team. Does anyone know his name, the county team and whether he was connected to the Stockton Lenhams?
Vera and Winifred McIntyre from Gateshead in the 1920s both married into the Lenham family in Stockton-on-Tees. Mother’s maiden name was Todd, but the identity of their father is a mystery.
Can anyone help identify the McIntyre family?
Hi Arch1vist42,
I have found Winifred and Vera on the 1939 Register at 81 Teesdale Avenue, Billingham. Also listed at that address are Sidney, Eva and Edna (siblings) and Richard and Mabel (parents). Unfortunately the 1939 Register does not show the relationship between household members but I have found Richard, Mabel, Sidney and Eva on the 1921 (at 17 Summer Street in Heworth) which confirms that Richard and Mabel are Sidney and Eva’s parents. Sidney and Eva entries of birth on the index state that their mother’s maiden name is Todd.
Following on from this I have found a marriage between a Richard McIntyre and a Mabel Todd registered in the June quarter of 1909, in the district of Gateshead.
I shall email you a copy of the entries on the 1939 Register and 1921 Census.
Kind regards,
Hannah

Not a subject specific comment Hannah. Just to comment on the wonderfully helpful service you provide
Hi Derek,
Thank you very much for your lovely comment. It is very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Hannah
Sidney McIntyre 1915-1944 died in army service with the Pioneer Corps on 10th March 1944. He’s commemorated in Billingham at St Cuthbert’s Churchyard, Section W, Grave 50.
He died as a patient in Winterton Emergency Hospital in Sedgefield.
Hello, hope you are well. I am wondering if you have any information on the Nertney family who lived in Garbutt Street and Major Street Stockton. My great Grandmother, Clara Nertney had a shop in Garbutt Street but I can’t find any reference at all. Thanks in advance. Claire Corking
Hi Claire,
Do you know when roughly she had the shop? The reference library holds copies of Wards directories from the 1890s-1930s which you could have a look at, or if you emails reference.library@stockton.gov.uk giving details of everything you know, we’d be happy to have a look for you.
Claire, there are plenty of records for the Nertney family of Stockton. Clara was originally Clara Dee (1881-1974) until she married Michael Nertney (1861-1923) in 1899 at Stockton. They went to have 12 children. Whilst the 1939 Survey shows Clara living at 50 Garbutt Street, it was her daughter Eileen who was the shopkeeper in those days.
Claire, there are lots of references to the Nertney family in the records for Stockton. Clara Nertney was originally Clara Dee (1881-1974) until she married MIchael Nertney (1861-1923) at Stockton in 1899. They went on to have 12 children. The 1939 Survey shows the Nertney family living at 50 Garbutt Street. By then Clara was a widow, and it was her daughter Eileen who was the shopkeeper. Hope this helps.
Thomas Lenham 1932-2007, born Lawson Street. Where would he have gone to school?
Mill Lane School which was near the tunnel. The exception would be for strong RC’S who may have gone to St. Mary’s which is where the High Street meets Norton Road.
Thank you Derek.
Probably Bowesfield Infant School. Records for the period he would have been there have been lost.
I am looking for any photos or information on the Salvation Army group in Stockton-on-Tees in the 1930s can anyone help
Kind regards
June
Margaret Harris 1935-2015, daughter of Thomas Harris and Mary Kemp in Stockton-on-Tees. Has anyone any idea how I might find out what her education had been. Which primary and secondary schools did she attend and where?
When I last sought Stockton’s Infant and Secondary school records (for about 1920 I recall) they were held in Middlesbrough Archives. Sadly I had little luck finding data on a pupil, for the logs only recorded data about the teachers and holidays for national events. The staff were most helpful as I recall.
Just done a 1921 census on 3 Milner Road, Norton
Anyone know or recognise any of these names?
George William Dickinson
Ella Dickinson
Hannah Dickinson
Mary Dickinson
Mary Dickinson
Lucky Nobbs
Fredd Johnson

Hannah do you have Trades Directories for Stockton in the 1950s. The sort that listed residential addresses as well?
Hi archiv1st47,
The only trade directory that we have for Stockton for that period of time is a W. Curtis & Co. Directory of Stockton for 1955 – 56. It does have residential listings, though it does not provide their occupation as the Ward Directories did.
We do have electoral registers for Stockton for the 1950s if that would be of any help?
Kind regards,
Hannah

I am looking for the names of the tenants at 57 Norton Road in 1955 and 1959.
The 1955 electoral roll has the following listed at 57 Norton Road:
Annie E. Godson
Robert W. Godson
James B. Stephenson
Marjorie Stephenson
The 1959 electoral roll has the following listed at 57 Norton Road:
Thomas Lenham
Margaret Lenham.
Kind regards,
Hannah
Thanks Hannah
Can you find out the name of the butcher who worked at 57 Norton Road sometime around the time Mr and Mrs Lenham lived there. About 1953-1955.
The only trade directory that we have for the 1950s is the Curtis Directory for 1955 – 56. There are four entries for butchers on Norton Road:
R.W. Addison & Son, Norton Road
Harry Fox, 287 Norton Road
T.A. Jackson, 42 Norton Road
T. Reveley, 123 Norton Road
Kind regards,

Thanks again Hannah.
4 Wolsingham Close, Hardwick: Seems to have been wiped off the map of Stockton. Does anyone have any pictures please?
Sorry, no photos, but just in case it helps others to know where it was, in amongst all the other “W” roads, here’s a link to a map:

Redhill Road, Roseworth: Does anyone recall a rather gruesome murder in a house on this road years ago?
She was stabbed to death in her living room.
Charles Edward Lenham married three times – Trenholm, Bailey and ?
Anyone?
Hello,
I can only find two marriages for Charles:
Clara Jane Trenholm in the March quarter of 1902 (her death was registered in the June quarter of 1917)
Mabel L(ouisa) Bailey in the March quarter of 1918.
Mabel died twenty years after Charles, her death was registered in the September quarter of 1981. Do you know if the two divorced?
It appears that Charles Edward Lenham’s death was registered in the June quarter of 1961.
Looking at some of the other posts regarding the Lenham family it is suggested that Charles Edward married an Eleanor Coy but I believe that Eleanor was Charles’ mother. I think there is a bit of confusion as Charles Edward’s father was also a Charles.
I hope that this information is of some help.
Kind regards,
Hannah
Stockton Reference Library
Hannah you’re right
Hi archiv1st47,
I think Paul is right, that Charles Snr did marry Clara Jane Trenholm (on the 1911 census, Clara’s husband is 49 (the age of Charles Senior) rather than 28 (which would be the age of Charles Junior for that time).
So it looks like Charles (Jnr) perhaps only married the once – to Mabel Louisa Bailey.
I hope that this helps.
Kind regards,
Hannah

I’m not sure your sources are correct archiv1st147
You have married him to his stepmother, questioned his status when he married Mabel and then assumed he remarried
His father Charles married Clara Jane Trenholm 1902Q1 (note she was the family servant in 1901) and they had 6 children by 1911 Census
Charles Edward Lenham’s birth was registered in Sculcoates Registration District in 1883Q4
Per 1891 Census he is living at 2 Brougham Street with parents Charles and Eleanor (nee Coy married 1883Q2 Sculcoates Registration District), 3 siblings and a servant
Per 1901 Census he is living at 24 Edwards Street with father Charles (mother’s death registered 1896Q4), 4 siblings and servant (Clara Trenholm)
Per 1911 Census he is living at 22 Chalk Street with grandmother Mary Coy and 3 siblings (his sister completed the household schedule declaring grandmother was a widow and all the rest were single)
Per 1911 Census living at 40 Lawson Street are his father Charles, his stepmother Clara (nee Trenholm married 1902Q1 Stockton Registration District) and their 6 children
Charles Edward Lenham married Mabel L Bailey 1918Q1 Stockton
Charles Edward Lenham 1884-1961 married only twice. To Clara in 1902 and Mabel in 1918.
So archiv1st you keep saying that his status was bachelor in 1902 and widower in 1918.
I can quickly get the National References i.e. Registration District and page number but I am seeking the Local References.
In order to quickly get this could you please reply with marriage certificate references (place of marriage and entry number). Better still please scan the marriage certificates and forward them to the Reference Library asking them to forward them to me so I can amend my records.
