  1. The photograph of the staircase brought back the memory of the day before the official opening of the municipal buildings. The Borough Architect was worried that the staircase might not stand up to the stresses of the number of people expected on the premises that day. Despite assurances from the structural engineers and the two ex Stockton Grammar School boys, Robin Miller and myself, who were employed on the overall design and construction of the building that there was no need for concern, proof was required. He obtained the proof he needed by filling the staircase with as many corporation staff as could be persuaded to take part and getting them to jump up and down on the treads. Not only did the reinforced concrete staircase accept the punishment but the glass panels with the etched views of old Stockton also thankfully survived.
