The first photograph is a view of Yarm Lane c1957, looking from the High Street, showing the Grey Horse public house and the Garrick Public House beyond. The second photograph shows The Grey Horse Hotel which was situated on the corner of Yarm Lane and the High Street c1972.

To the Stockdale contingent:- my mother Edie Renwick was a barmaid for Charlie Stockdale in the Grey Horse in the late forties, early fifties. If my memory serves me well it sold Flowers beers with the company sign being William Shakespeare. When I was of an age I partook of a few pints in there [1964]. Don’t know whether your father was still licencee or not but the beer was very acceptable.
My mum was a barmaid at the Grey Horse 1940 is a long time ago .
Hi my name is Mick Quin and I used the grey horse pub and was a very good pal of Charles Stockdale, and I also remember the barmaid and Mrs Stockdale, I bought my first car from Charles in 1954, a 1937 Austin 16 for £25, came out the side gate turned right into Yarm Lane and the Head Gasket blew got one just up Yarm Lane for 8 bob fitted there and then, and away, by the way the beer Charles sold in 1954 was Nimmos of Castle-Eden, Co. Durham they bought flowers over and before it closed Withbreds Beer bought over Nimmos.
I seem to remember it selling GEORGE YOUNGERS beer
Newcastle house.
Definitely not
Around 1957 I would meet my mate and his father in there and as far as I know it was a Newcastle house.
Took this from a search on the site and if you can see that it shows the Newcastle star on a swinging sign Anon. https://picturestocktonarchive.files.wordpress.com/2013/12/t947.jpg
Wrong pub Bob, that’s The Theatre. i.e Jocker’s
That picture is the Theatre (Jockers) with the swinging Newcastle sign above the door.
This photo shown is definately is a Newcastle owned pub

This is Jocker Browns, not the Grey Horse.
That’s The Theatre (Jockers) over the road from the Grey Horse
This picture is Jockers (The Theatre) if you look closely you can read the name.
This picture is of the Theatre (Jockers) which was definitely a Newcastle house, I think the thread is referring to the Grey Horse on the corner of High Street and Yarm lane.
I replied to Anons comment that Jockers was never a Newcastle pub and the picture showing the swinging Newcastle sign above the door proves I am right.
Ermm… Bob, that may be true, but that’s also obviously not a picture of the Grey Horse, it’s The Theatre. I think you are discussing two different pubs.
I was answering a quote from Anon who said the that Jockers was never a Newcastle pub and was proving him wrong.
Hi Bob, If you read from the top of the thread, the original post from Mike Renwick and reply by Mick Quin are both about the Grey Horse, hence the confusion and many replies. Anyway far too many replies on this. End.
That photo is of The Theatre (Jockers) in Yarm Road not The Grey horse.
What I said was the Grey Horse was never a Newcastle pub. The Theatre was a William Youngers pub taken over by Scottish & Newcastle Breweries.
When Newcastle came on the scene the first two pubs I remember were the Brown Jug in Norton and which is now the Dubliners in Thornaby.
It was available in most working mens clubs.
Sorry – Yarm Lane not Yarm Road.
Yes its Jocker Browns, did my drinking there 1956-1966
