So sad another building as gone we were married they in 1970 I have a pic of us out side of this register office.we did emigrated to australia
We married at the Registry Office on 03 April 1971. It was raining and the confetti underfoot was slippery. Only our parents and sisters attended. We left for Australia next year and are still here.

She lived next door but one to me on Darlington Lane when I lived in the Police Houses. They moved on to Yarm Road after that. I remember you Joanne and your two brothers.
Did your mother Wyne live in St Bernards Road or one of those streets round there Joanne?
My mother, Wyne Barker, was a Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages, in this office, originally under Mr Salmon, from the mid-fifties, until retiring at the age of 65 in 1996. By this time the office had undergone three moves, the Shambles, the town Hall and then to the areMa by the railway station.
Two original stained glass windows from this building are currently cared for in the collection of Preston Hall Museum and Park.
I’ve since found out that my ancestors who married in January 1857 at the Register Office would have married at the Borough Hall, on the High Street, which is where the Register Office was situated at that time apparently.
I”d also like to know where the old register office was in the 1800″s – and also the “Salem baptist chapel”, as family history shows a few marriages in these places. Anyone any ideas.
I too have family members married in Salem Baptist Chapel. I don’t know where the records are (if any).

In the late 1800s, Stockton’s registrar had an office within the Borough Hall, a large multi-functional building which stood on the High Street not far from where Lesley Browns toy shop used to be.
Does anyone know where the Register Office was situated before the Nelson Terrace building opened in the 1870s? I believe that ancestors of mine married in Stockton Register Office in January 1857 but I”ve no idea where this might have been. Thanks for any help!
Posted my Banns there in 1971 but married in Middlesbrough. Still married. Is it really 34 years?
Buildings such as this should never have been demolished. Too many lovely Facades were lost by Council Vandals.
The proper name of the office of the Registrar of Births, Marriages and Deaths is the REGISTER OFFICE, not Registry Office as so often miscalled.
