Stockton Parish Church

s54Stockton Parish Church viewed from the NW as seen from the High Street. Possibly designed by Sir Christopher Wren. Built 1710-1712, chancel rebuilt 1906, side chapel added 1925. The foundation stone was laid on 5th June 1710, at the south eastern corner of the church. The church was officially opened on 20th March 1712, by Reverend Thomas Rudd and consecrated on 21st August 1712, by Lord Crewe, Bishop of Durham. Stockton became a seperate parish from Norton with effect from 24th June, 1713 under an Act of Parliament, 1711. The church is a grade I listed building.

  1. Your caption should say the view is from the SW, not NW. Wren”s Architectural work reached its conclusion around 1708 and Stockton is not listed in his acknowledged work. However, as he designed and had built 52 London churches after 1660, who is to say whether one of his designs was adapted by a student/colleague? My view is that he was too frail and the roads inadequate to allow a site visit after 1710 when he was 78!
