  1. Just to correct one of the comments regarding Hardcastles chemist shop on Finkle Street – the contents of this shop were in fact given to Beamish Museum and not Preston Hall Museum. Most of the contents of the chemist shop at Preston Hall are from a Richmond Chemist and several other local sources. The Preston Hall exhibit is currently being relocated to a new and improved position in the period street at the museum.

  2. As I remember it and I lived at 11 Finkle Str. from 1926-1956, from left looking down:- as it is now,Yorkshire Bank on corner, Mr. Price ran Hardcastle Chemist Shop, (exhibits are now at Preston Park) Whitley”s music shop,Heavisides Printer, Grahams outfitters, Mrs griffin on Griffiths home made candy,Bakers Printer, Hodgsons Yard,Mr.Lackenby Printer,Newby Robson & Cadle,Solicitors,11 Finkle Str.Health Dept. Mrs. Janet Crawford was the Caretaker for 10 & 11 Finkle Str.from before 1st. W.W.till after W.W.2 11A Mrs O”Neil 12 Mr. Mrs. Parkingson, 14 Mrs Bonner.

  3. 1881 Census shows 1 Isaac HART Tailors Shop; 2 William HARDCASTLE Chemist, 3 Mary EATON Dressmaker, 4 Michael HEAVISIDES Printer, 5 John HUDSON Saddler & Harness Maker, 6 -, 7 -, 8 David COBB Butter Merchant, 9 William LACKENBY Master Printer, 10 Jane WILSON Office Cleaner (No Dom), 11 John SMITH Warehousman, 12 John TALINTYRE Grocer. 4. Missed out here is no.11 Finkle Str. This was Stockton”s Health Dept. Next to Finkle Chambers. Dr.McGonnigle had his office on the first floor, his side window facing up to the High Str.He was the creator of slum clearance in England. In the 30s. he cleared Thistle Green, Caseys Court, Finkle Str. They were all moved to Blue Hall, or Primrose Hill.
