Barclay’s were orig. a Quaker banking family who ‘combined’ with banks operated by other Quakers i.e the Backhouse Bank of Darlington and the Gurney Bank of Norwich. The ‘Martins’ too, were a Quaker family of bankers from Norfolk. They were all known as being very astute in their lending and particularly commercial loans. In fact, it is said that the UK’s industrial Revolution of the late 18thC, onward, was wholly funded by the foresight of the Quakers, who built a reputation for honesty and straight-dealing. Just what they’d have made of the banking scandals and corrupt dealing, we are becoming familiar with in today’s ‘global’ banking activities, we will never know.
