46 High St in the 1911 census was the Victoria Cafe, run by my gtgrandmother Jane Ann Kirkham. She lived upstairs with her family, including Harry Kirkham Urwin, my grandfather. Does anyone know for how long it was a cafe?
“Swindlepenny”s” – 1962 I bought a pink shirt & a knitted tie (not a handmade example BUT a mass produced one). As I walked along the High Strret, carrying my purchases in a Winpenny”s bag, several of my schoolmates dropped to their knees and did due obeisance to the bag! The interior was phenomenal with the glass fronted presses and the wood finishes. I see, from this site, that it has now shut down. Times are definitely changin”!
