Although the building has been demolished, the church has not closed. A new modern energy efficient building has now been opened on part of the same site. It is always sad when a much loved building outgrows its usefulness, but we have to look to the future. The new building is much more suitable for a liberal religious group with a modern outlook. In particular it will use the minimum of precious resources and is generating its own electricity. We hope it will also be used by local community groups.
I was married in the Church. It sadly has now been demolished – to make room for a new Church 😉
Sadly its been demolished as I found out yesterday to my surprise as I drove past the street.
As stated by Peter, the Unitarian church was located between the corner of Wellington street and Vane street. I attended the church in the mid-60″s whilst living in Carlton street along with other children in the close knit community. I spent sunday afternoons at the small sunday school at the rear of the building which I think backed onto Howden street. The church, along with the masonic hall are the only buildings left in this small area.
