Hi, I live in Ottawa Canada! There is a collection bin nearby where people bring donations for the poor. I happened to walk by and found a piece of Stockton Parish Church history.
It was a framed certificate presnted to former Rev W Venables on his leaving the parish in 1880. It’s dated Nov 17, 1880.
"Durham Diocesan Association of Ringers – Stockton Parish Church: On Wednesday May 28th 1879 the Ringers of the Parish Church rang a 720 Bb minor in 27 minutes".
It’s lists 6 performers as well as the conductor.
Not sure if it’s the original or not, but quite nice and interesting piece of Stockton Church History.
The belief that the church was designed by Sir Christopher Wren is thought to have been brought about by the discovery of a written statement found on a piece of paper bound into a volume of the parish register. The story has it that this piece of paper was subjected to forensic tests which proved that the paper was of the early 18th century, the correct period, but that the ink was definitely not. Someone had obviously gone to some lengths to carry out this deception. The best that can be said is that the church was designed in the style of Wren, as so many churches were at that time.
