  1. Benny Brown – Benny as I was directed to do once before check the “Friends of Ropner Park” website. It is well worth while reading what”s going on. The articles & clickable map are informative.

  2. You forgot to mention the Peacocks on display in the Avery section of Ropner Park Ronald, also the Putting Green which was a very popular spot for sporting kids. I remember playing Tennis in the Stockton Junior Tennis Final on the excellent tennis courts. Are all these attractions still available in the Park?

  3. A walk around the lake was a very popular pastime in my chidhood and youth, as was feeding the ducks by the infants being entertained by young parents – my wife and I included in the “50”s. There is also a recollection of the lake once being frozen sufficiently that the powers that be permitted the public to venture on the surface, either walking for the novelty or skating. My skates (hand-me-downs) were made out of blocks of shaped wood in which a steel blade was slotted. A protruding screw was threaded onto the heel of the shoe or boot and a strap secured the forepart. A favourite detour to the lake was via the Rose Garden, a very popular and secluded area of fragrance and colour. The island (s?) were sanctuaries for the waterfowl, but the lure of food by hand was always too strong for them to remain independent of mankind. Benches ringed the lake at intervals and space was generally at a premium in the summer afternoons and evenings, as one could catch shade and also hear the brass bands entertaining on a Sunday.
