  1. The Unicorn was also known as Dobbies after the Landlord Albert Dobson. Later after he died his wife took over and then it was Nellies. In the old days buildings had lightning conductors on the buildings. The Hawes shop which in later years became the Nat West Bank had a lightning conductor on it. It was a broad copper band which was from its highest point on the building down to just above the ground. It then circumferenced the building used as a damp proof course. This was noticeable in my time as a youth but in later years when I looked for it when the building was the Bank it had disappeared. As Frank states, not much has changed. 20/03/2012 11:01:34

  2. This Picture Stockton site keeps throwing up surprises, this is a picture I had never seen yet if you stood in the same place and took another photo today very little has changed. The fabric is still there including the Unicorn or Top house as we called it, the little shop I knew as Hawes, the corner which was once the Hambletonian but was Fosters paper and sweet shop in my time. Note the huge Elm which I saw cut down during the Dutch Elm scare, it had a circular iron seat around it on which we would sit as kids or much later sit during our courting, it was all so gentle and in view back then. Take note of the clock, where did that come from, was it put in by the Tram company? There are so many unanswered questions, things my Father could have told me but I never asked, we took so much for granted as kids. A few weeks ago another old picture taken further up the Norton High Street gave one the same feeling, nothing much had changed yet we old Nortonians do know much has changed. When we can once more post pictures I am hoping some more hidden gems come to light on which we can comment, well done Picture Stockton.20/03/2012 10:33:33
