Thanks for the info Kevin.I`ve found quite a good view of `The Greyhound`on this site(ref t7684).From this photo and comparing old maps it appears to be in the same location as `The Shades Inn`,but seems to be of a later design.Plus the adjoining brewery no longer seems to exist.Perhaps the `Shades` and brewery were demolished shortly after 1880 and replace by the `Greyhound`?
My great grandparents lived at Number 113 Blackbull Yard. James and Jemima Orin.
The Greyhound Inn can be seen (not very clearly) in a number of pictures on this site.

From studying these pictures, I’d say the location of the pub was immediately north of the footbridge behind the Castlegate centre.
At the end of Black Bull Yard,close to the river, there once stood a public house called The Shades Inn.It adjoined the Tees Brewery and in 1871,together with the brewery was the property of William Young,brewer.By the 1890`s it was no longer listed in local trade directories.Can anyone tell me if they remember a pub in this location.perhaps they changed the name of the`Shades`.A pub named the Greyhound appears at an address on The Quayside from the 1890`s onward.could anyone give me an idea of `The Greyhounds` location.
With reference to the Albion Inn i have since found out that the landlord Thomas Young was married to my ancestor Elizabeth Ruddock and would like to get in touch with those connected to the Young family as there are so many of them, if anyone has a photo of the Albion inn or has any information of the family or the inn itself i would like to hear from them.
My ggg grandfather James Ross had a grocers shop at 3 Albion Street from the 1860s to the 1890s. He died in 1888 and his wife Elizabeth Jane Ross took over the business until the 1890s she went into the Alsmhouses in Dovecote Street where she died in 1904. It is quite possible that James drank in the Albion Inn.
Further to my comment ref Black bull Yard, Wiiliam Young”s son Thomas was the landlord in 1881 of the Albion Inn, 11 Albion Street. Does anybody (perhaps Mr. Harbron) have any information about this inn??
My Wife”s gg grandfather William Young also lived in Black Bull Yard in 1861. He was a brewer and in 1851 was listed as living at Tees Brewery Yard which appears to be next door to Black Bull Yard. The number 57 to which “anon” refers is not the house number but a census schedule number
my great great grandmother lived in 57 Black Bull Yard on the 1861 census. She worked as a lodgings Housekeeper. She had only been living in Stockton a few years after arriving from Ireland with her husband (who died 1860 at Blackbull Yard) and her 5 children.
I think that the large black gate on the right of this picture was the back gate to 69 High Street. from 1939- 1951 occupied by Dicken,s Tool, Hardware & Model shop. Behind this gate was a turntable to turn the horse drawn coaches around. The stables were all ceramic tiled. The property was originally built in the 1800s for a wealthy tailer.I can remember painting this gate in the 1940s.
