Carlton, Stockton-on-Tees. The 1834 rail-line from the S.W Durham cold fields to Stockton. Later Port Clarence, saw a number of small iron works in the 1850s on the north bank of the Tees including Norton and Carlton. Carltons on the Stillington Road, the Carlton Works, S Bastow & Co had a very short life. Having only 1 blast-furnace, workshop and housing row in the 1860,s. In the 1870″s it lost out as did many North Tees “cottage Industry iron-works” to the vast iron-masters of Middlesborough, leaving only grass-covered and bush mounds and dips alongside the road to Stillington.
