The Stockton and Darlington knot which appeared on their carriages.  The railway committee decided on calling the company ‘Stockton and Darlington Railway’ rather than ‘Darlington and Stockton Railway’, in order to try and please the Stockton party who had rallied for the canal.  By putting Stockton first in the name it gave them a certain amount of status!
