Just after the first world war the Goverment did provide smallholdings for ex service personel. Most of the ones I knew were used for chicken farming. I do not recall miners having that luxury. I do however remember the miners cottages which was part of the North East history. J.Norman Kidd.
The road under this bridge leads to Moorhouse farm where I used to go “pea picking”as a kid. Did I work with you at “Metro Vicks” Colin & were you a neighbour in Fairfield?
The bridge off Yarm Road goes down to I believe Moorehouse estate, I used to deliver down there back in the 50s and 60s, it might have been built by Moorhouse the builders. The main railway line runs over the bridge towards Eaglescliffe and beyond. Terry Dicken.
THE HOUSES ARE STILL THERE, ITS CALLED MOOREHOUSE ESTATE IF I REMEMBER RIGHT, I CERTAINLY DELIVERED A BATHROOM SUITE TO ONE OF THE HOUSES ABOUT 5 YEARS AGO WHEN I WORKED FOR THE PLUMB CENTER IN STOCKTON,AND I DROVE A 7.5 TON WAGON, I DO BELIEVE THAT THE REFUSE WAGONS GO UNDER THE BRIDGE AS WELL.
I remember this bridge. In the fifty”s it led to a group of 5 acre smallholdings, with a house for each. (are the houses still there??) My cycling buddy Bill Bray”s parents had one of them. I think they may have all been ex miners, anyone confirm this?
NICK WHELAN – THIS BRIDGE IS SITUATED OFF YARM ROAD JUST AFTER THE ROUNDABOUT THAT TAKES YOU TO PRESTON FARM INDUSTRIAL ESTATE, GOING TOWARDS YARM,I HAVE DELIVERED GOODS TO THE ESTATE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BRIDGE, AND I DROVE A 7 TON BOX WAGON, WHICH JUST PASSED UNDER WITH ABOUT 6 INCHES TO SPARE, AND I COULD TURN THE WAGON ROUND.
This I am sure is the bridge between Eaglescliffe and Hartburn Junction/A66 – put in Google Maps 54.54127,-1.341499 – and it”s so narrow you can only just get something like a Transit van through – how anyone can do a house move I”d hate to think, also a delivery wagon couldn”t turn round and the main road past Preston Park is at the top of the rise you can see through the bridge.
