I was born in Light Pipe Hall Road and remember well Oxbridge Lane railway tunnel flooding! I was 7 years old, and coming from St. Cuthbert’s school to my grans, for dinner (also Light Pipe hall Rd.) when the heavens opened (June 1952). So I did what any good catholic boy would do, I sought sanctuary in the presbytery of St Cuthbert’s church. Fr. McKenna came to the door, at my ring, and when he saw one half drenched little boy, and then did a double take at the rain, offered me the loan of his raincoat. Weeeellll! With him being 6ft 7in, and me being 4ft 7in you could have fitted the rest of my class under there as well! Happy days.
I remember it well. we lived in Oxbridge Lane (I think second from the right in the photo) and had to walk to school one morning. At the bottom of the hill by the roundabout the beck was flooding over the road and I remember a Fireman standing there in his waders with the flowing water splashing up the backs of his legs.
