The locomotive in the photograph looks suspiciously clean and smart for the late 1950s early 1960s and is probably recently ex-works after an overhaul and re-paint. I wonder if it is perhaps on a post-overhaul, light engine trial run from Darlington North Road Works? You could often see ex -works locos at Stockton on these short trips to check on bearings, steam tightness, etc, before they were returned to their parent depots, often in distant parts of the country. For most it would be the smartest they would look until their next overhaul.
Definitely the foot bridge at Hartburn Junction. As for the best footbridge to get ones face full of soot etc, surely that honour must go to the Pheonix bridge at the south end of Stockton Station as that was an open lattice structure. Obviously we were of sterner stuff at the rough end of Stockton and did not need timber side boarding to protect us from the smoke!
Ah! the Spring Street Railway Bridge. Surely the best bridge in Stockton for getting your face full of smoke and hair full of grit ! How convenient of them to put the handrail at just the level to stand upon to see over the wooden fence.

I believe this picture is taken near Spring Street railway footbridge, near the Ropner Park entrance.
