  1. The photos of Lane House Farm were taken between 1989 and 1990. When we lived there, there was not a house to be seen at all – in winter, it was literally pitch black with no lights whatsoever in any direction. The snow used to fall really heavily there, even though it was only a stone’s throw away from the housing estate of Ingleby Barwick. We were quite often snowed in for days at a time. I used to feed the wildlife and quite often would have both foxes and hedgehogs feeding from the same tubs. The foxes would often take the tubs into the next field and I would have to go scouting around for them, before I could give them their next meal. My children used to be able to ski on the hillocks around the pond. To the front of the farmhouse was an orchard, which bore the most beautiful plums. The trees used to hang so heavily with them in the autumn and they would grow as profusely as bunches of grapes. They were so sweet and used to be loved by all the birds and animals, as well as by us. The tree standing between the house and the lane was a pear tree, and we could stretch out of the bathroom window and pick the pears.

    • It must have been crowded for you living there with the Lamb family. I married their daughter Susan Lamb in 1983. Her dad, Bob Lamb died in May 1989 and his mother moved out to live with her brother in Hilton the following year.
