Oh wow…I didn”t think I would get any replies here, so forgive me if I babble on a bit. Tony…that was really interesting to read what you know about my grandfather. I wonder if perhaps you have snippets that you could send me copies. I have seen your website (family history) so I will email you if thats ok. Eva… I have sent you an email ok. I reallyyyyyyyyyyyy want to talk to you! I guess we would be cousins! Your grandfather Arthur was my grandfathers (Bertie) brother
Oh my god!!!! Eva I did try and contact you via your website… my cousin Peter Clarance gave me your name. I will contact you again through your website ok I am really desperate to get in touch with you now. I have also created a website about Lloyd and have included only as much as I have managed to find out about him. As I am doing our family history I have included family that I know of. This is fantastic to hear from you!
From what i”ve been told Lloyd Clarance formed the “Clarance (Clarence) lodge” R.A.O.B in Consett. My great grandfather Rewcastle Armstrong was also a member Clarance Lodge R.A.O.B. in Consett. This was mention in Rewcastle”s obituary in several newspapers and also mentioned Lloyd. He was a good friend of Lloyd and also assisted Lloyd in the stage management of the Globe Theatre (Music Hall) formally known as The New Theatre in Consett where Lloyd was manager for the a firm of brewers. Lloyd was a member of the original “Clown Cricketers” and in 1874 performed before the crown prince and princess of Germany. Lloyd retired in 1924 and the Globe Theatre closed two years later. It would seem that the clowning has rubbed off onto our side of the family, as my brother is known as Herbie Treehead and now has a dinosaur circus show.
lloyd Clarance and Kate Hollingsworth were my great grandparents on my fathers side .My grandfather was Arthur Clarance as was my father and also is my eldest brother . I went into the theatre originally as a dancer and choreographer and my daughter Wendy is also in the Business . I am now an agent booking artists overseas in the 5 star hotel circuit so am still connected with show business. My great Grandfather and grandmother have a fascinating history and I am always eager to hear any new stories about them . My cousin Pat has some wonderful memorabilia about Lloyd Clarance and I have many early theatrical posters etc. of him and my great grandmother . I also have theatrical posters of my grandfather , Arthur Clarance , and my father Arthur Clarance . lloyd Clarance was a very clever man in many respects and , I understand , was 60 years in the Business , 50 of them with his wife Kate.
Thats my Grandfather & Grandmother !! Lloyd Clarance was actually called John William Hunt. He took the stage name Lloyd Clarance and became very well known in his time as a writer, comedian and produced many plays, pantomimes including Burlesque. His wife was originally called Catherine Elinor Hollingsworth and went by the name Kate for many years. Lloyd Clarance died 1939 aged 90 and is buried at Benfieldside Cemetery in Consett. He was a member of the R.A.O.B and apparently had “Clarance Lodge” named after him. I am still trying to find a picture of that!
