My husband”s gran was given the pleasure along with many other scholars selected from Stockton & Darlington to participate in this Railway Centenary, and to ride in the train of London and North Eastern Railway Company in the procession of railway stock on Thursday, July 2nd 1925 from Stockton to Darlington. To mark this great day she kept her letter of instructions to scholars selected dated 30/06/1925 along with her medal given to her at school to mark the centenary. She has also noted on the letter that the train she was a passenger of was “The City Of Newcastle”.
Stockton Darlington Railway Celebration 1925 along with actors hired by the L N.E.R, a local railway Silver Band replicated the Yarm Town Band of 1825. At the Royal Stand in Urlay-Nook, were his Royal Highness”s the Duke and Duchess of York and official guests. As “Locomotion” appeared the band struck up “See The Conquering Hero Come”. Unfortunately to keep traction the loco had to jerk as it slowly past the stand, this led to a rousing but very dicordent rendering, as musicians swayed for balance, with part of the trumpet section sitting on the floor. This display was given one of the loudest applause for both “Locomotion No 1” and the tenacity of the musicians.
Were these coal trucks reconstructions?
