My mother is Patricia, her sister included Celia, Sheila, Margaret, Mal, Mary plus 3 others.

I think I knew Patty Allen who lived just close to Samphire Street…
My family lived in Saltview Terrace and before that in Crosby Terrace.
Patricia was at St Thomas’ school. My aunt was Miss Kernan who became headmisress in the 1960’s.

This is a long shot, but did the Kernans go to Port Clarence from Workington? My relative was Mary Margaret nee Devlin married to John Kernan and they had two daughters Mariea and Gertrude. Sadly Mary died in Port Clarence 1924 she was my grandfathers sister.

Yes, the Kernans did move from Workington (Harrington) to Port Clarence. Mary Margaret and John were my grandparents. They had five children, Kathleen, Gertrude, James (my father), Hilda and Jackie. Kathleen who may have been called Marie Kathleen died before I was born (1941) and so I never knew her.

I do know that the family lost 2 sons in the battle of the Somme in 1916. (Francis and Peter). They are buried in France and are mentioned on Thiepval monument in the Somme.

Gertrude was my teacher at St Thomas’s in Port Clarence she taught there for thirty odd years and is buried in Low Grange cemetery. I believe Jimmy Kernan who lived down next to Morleys pub was a relative.

Yes they were a lovely family, Ran the top house in the mid 50’s. If only bricks and mortar could talk what stories that pub could tell!
If you look on Google earth map’s the pub is still there most of the perimeter walls are gone, the yard was very large containing stables,storage building and the men’s urinal which I had to hose out many mornings..

We used to go to the Christmas parties at Graythorp club. We lived at Haverton and I remember the Corking think his name was Jack he had a boat at Greatham Creek here my grandad also had a boat. Great memories. My grandads name was Frank Whitacre.

I don’t remember the Hatton family at Haverton Hill but I do know Colin very well, did you know that he wrote a book about Haverton Hill? , it is a very good read,
Colin lives in Marton, two of his sisters Betty and Barbara live in Billingham and his other sister Dorothea lives in York, Colin was an engineer with Power Gas and travelled all over the world with his job, he is now retired and gives talks to local groups and societies on The Great War, this is how I got to know him, I now create slide shows to go with his talks. I know Colin has a photograph of a class of the 1950’s at Haverton Hill school, I will try and get hold of it and send it to Picture Stockton.
Both sides of my family lived in Haverton Hill, my mothers family came from Kent to get work and they lived in Ash Street and Beech Street or Road, I’m not too sure which, before settling in the Cowpen Estate, my fathers family lived in Cleveland Avenue and the eldest son Bill lived in Rosedale Road, my mothers family name was Leek and my fathers was Coleman, across the road from my fathers house lived Louise Madden, she is now my Step Mother In Law.
I have been trying to get in touch with one of your contributors “Billy Corking” through Friends Reunited recently without any luck, if you see this Bill ask Picture Stockton for my email as I have a photograph you might like to see.

Does anyone remember William Thomas Gill or Mary Ann Gill from Haverton hill? We were told he owned houses in Haverton Hill and died from a motorbike accident. Mary Ann Gill moved to Cowpen and a daughter called Constance Gill and a son called Harry Gill.

Many of you who were born in Haverton may have been delivered by my great Auntie Mary Shaw (Nee Hall). She was a local midwife. Does any body remember the Halls? George and Helen with all their children. George worked in the shipyard.

Mary was midwife when I was pregnant, I lived in Rodney Street. I remember the Hall family and their daughter, I think she was called Jean and owned a Guest Houae on Norton Road. Don’t know if she still does. I remember seeing her Dad there as I worked at the home next door.

Anyone remember me, George Morris (born 1938) 43 St Vincents St. HH . I have a sister Dorothy. I was the paper boy. Went to HH school boys school. Left about 1953. Joined Coldstream guards in 1955 now live in Hertfordshire.
My mate was Bill Collier from Marlborough road. My sister lived no 3 ?Marlborough Road when she got married to Jack Page. He was an ICI tanker driver.
Mam .. Amy Morris worked in the fish shop. Dad worked at ICI after 30 yrs in Army. Dad used to go in the ‘middle house’ pub!!
I also sang in the Haverton church choir!!

I remember you George, I’m from Hartlepool, it was my granda and nana Collier who lived in Marlborough St., my grandad was the groundsman on the sports field opposite the house, spent most of my summer holidays in Haverton Hill all through 50’s and 60’s, Bill was my uncle who worked in the shipyard. He married Janet and had three daughters and a son, Debbie Dawn Janice and Brian, I’m Bob the son of his older sister Mary who married Jack Christal. Sadly Bill passed away six months ago, but was good to hear a name so familiar in my childhood, brought back memories, hope you and yours are well.

Robert. Good to hear from you. I did know my mate Bill had died.. Was very sad about that. He was a great character and still miss him. We had many a good night out! Often had to walk over the Transporter late at night because the bridge was closed when we’d been to Middlesbro.. Were at Bill and Janet’s wedding… must be over 56 years ago now as ours was 55 yrs!
Bill married Janet from the South and I married Maureen from London and still live down here but in Welwyn Garden City now.
We know all their children and spent many good times with them when we visited from London. We still keep in touch with Janet and Dawn. They know where we live.
Was it your mam who sang? I remember staying in Hartlepool with one of Bill’s family many a night when I couldn’t get back to Haverton caused by one thing or another!
I had a motor bike a Norton Dominator and showing off one day went through the fencing around the sports field. The fence suffered more than I did.
Good memories of Haverton and Bill and Janet… I remember Eileen too.

My dad and his brother are Bill & Alan Hall son’s of Ernie & Nora Hall, Mary Shaw ( Hall ) was my Grandads ( Ernie Hall ) sister George was my grandad’s brother and they both worked in the shipyard. Yes, I remember Caygill’s very well, and Ashton’s fish shop next door (I went to the Convent in Hatlepool with their girls, Liz was in my year) and the Co-op on the other side (even remember my mam’s ‘divi’ number! I used to go to your mam and dad’s shop, (with my old penny pocket money) and buy the smallest Cadbury’s chocolate bar you could get! I lived in Hardwick Road round the corner from Windlestone, from 1956 to 1972 but it seemed miles to walk…

I remember your family well although only remember you as a baby. My name is Denise nĆ©e Little and my parents had a shop called Elsie Liddell Ltd. in The Circle. We moved there in 1950 from York where my Dad had been a policeman. My sister Sheila was a friend of Ann and I used to play with your sister Freda. I remember your tiny ferocious dog too that took a chunk out of my ankle! I have several photos of us all playing together when we were kids and one including your Dad although I have absolutely no idea where we were at the time – maybe a picnic outing. I remember being quite fascinated by your Dad’s chipping machine! Loved his fish and chips and the free ‘scraps’ in return for a stack of newspapers – heaven in a paper cone, I don’t suppose the diet police would allow it now!

HI, I have just stumbled on this site and am amazed! I’m Karen (nee) O’Malley. My father was Dr O’Malley. My sister and I have just been talking about the ‘Old Days’ and thought we might find something to jog our memories. It brought a smile to my face reading all about where we used to live. In my family there wer 3 girls. Tricia, (who sadly passed away last year,) Jenny who lives in London and me (the youngest). We lived in Haverton till 1958 then moved up to Billingham. I went to St Josephs in Hartlepool.

Karen Blenkharn, I have fond memories of your dad (I was actually a wee bit scared of him when I was a little girl and my mam would take me to see him at the surgery on Belasis Ave, no idea why, he was a man of few words and wore glasses like me). I remember my mam refused to see Doctor Hunter, always waited for Dr. O’Malley. He delivered me and my siblings at home, one of which was a very difficult full breach baby. My mam had full faith in him and refused to go to the hospital for the birth. He was our family doctor until he retired? from the Marsh House surgery. I have such fond memories of life in Haverton Hill too, was born there in 1954 until our family was moved to Low Grange.

Hi Hilary, I remember you well how lovely to hear from you. For some reason I have only just received an email from this site to tell me that there had been updates to this thread hence the delay in responding.
I’m sorry to tell you that Sheila died on 31 March 2001 from cancer which had only been diagnosed the previous summer and had unfortunately spread too far to be treated successfully. She was only 57 and has been very sorely missed by us all. She left behind a son Peter 19 and daughter Louise 27. Her husband Michael Barrett has since remarried and is living in Majorca. Peter is single and Associate Director of Infinite Global London and Louise is married with two sons 13 & 11 living in Hertford and is Head of Foreign Languages and RE at Heath Mount School.
I envy your warmer climate; that seems a sensible move from the NE coast of England! Hope you and family are well.

Yes, I remember the Caygill’s fish and chip shop and Dr O’Malley’s nearby. I think I was in the same class as Freda at the primary school. We lived at the Queen’s Head Hotel from around 1953-1957. An unforgettable experience!

I remember you very well and your family. We lived at 23 The Circle Haverton Hill. My dad was Dr O’Malley. We moved to Billingham in 1958. I think I was brought up on fish and chips as you were only a couple of doors away from us! I’m Karen, the youngest of three girls. There was also the the bakery next door to us and on the other side was a haberdashery and wool shop owned by the Liddles. I went to St Josephs Convent in Hartlepool.

I was born in Rodney street in the late 1950s. I am lucky enough to have travelled to many places. But Haverton Hill will always be a place in my heart. The people were the most friendly you will ever come across. We moved to no 1 Harrow Terrace and later to Cambridge Terrace before moving to Billingham. I had great times living in the clarences and grew up with John Tindle and Geoff Robinson to name but a few. My late mam and dad, George and Olga Williams you couldn’t ask for better parents. I am nearing my retirement now and will be heading of to pastures new, Barcelona were my team the arsenal will be getting a good lesson in football! But the people of Haverton Hill and the Clarences will remain in my heart till I die.

My grandad and gran lived in Hawke Street, Haverton Hill. The Charlton family. My mum Minnie moved south to Cobham in Surrey. I was born Hawke street in 1946 but went south with mum. Grandad was called Chuck in the shipyard as was his son David Charlton. I scanned the Pictures to see if I could see any members of my family.

My Grandad ‘Tot’ Teasdale, lived in Hawke Street and my dad, Matty used to talk about ‘Chuck’ Charlton, he has to be your Grandad. I was born in 1955 in the flat above Clarke’s Butchers in Hope Street. Sadly my Dad passed away in November 2011 and ‘Tot’ in 1982.

David Wray – I remember Tot marying Nora !!! they had their ‘do’ in the pub in Stockton High Street, (the ‘Vaux’? maybe you were there!) I must have been about 8 or 10 and my aunty Brenda (nee Teasdale then Carroll), taking me over to the market to buy me a manicure set to keep me quiet. Saldy both Brenda and my Dad Matt have passed away in the last two years.

What an absolutely brilliant site. I lived in Billingham but had to travel through Haverton Hill by bus to get to work in Middlesbrough. I used to love coming home early on a Friday and see all the shipyard workers pile into the pubs – brilliant days. I was surprised to see Martin Durnion’s name mentioned, married to Mary Mulloy. Martin and I used to be in the Silvertones Jazz band – sorry if you’re reading this Martin and it’s embarrasssed you lol. I’ve lived in Guernsey since 1977 but was back in Billingham last year, went to take a look round Haverton and Port and was going to cross over on the Transporter but it was out of action due to repairs, very disappointing. Keep on posting things on this site it’s great.

My gran Alice Baker was born in Haverton Hill in 1910, her parents were Roger Baker and Sarah Jane Elliot from Port Clarence. Do you know any family history on the Baker family from Haverton Hill also the Elliott family from Port Clarence? Sadly my great grandmother died in 1911 when my gran was just few months old baby. All I know that my great grandfather was remarried to Mary Whalen (Berry) in 1935, he died in 1961. My gran left Haverton Hill for Dundee, Scotland for the jute job. She was married to Edward Brannen in 1930. I would be happy to hear from the Baker or Elliott relatives who would know about this family history. Please write me back. I am over in Canada. I was born in Laburnum Grove and my family the Burnham’s loved the port still have cousins living in the port and will not leave. Nice bit of history in this photo as on the right is Port Clarence signal box which was knocked down in 1964, I was the last person to work a shift there, as I walked out of the door they bulldozed it down, thanks for that memory.

I was wondering wether or not you had found out any information regarding my grandad Tommy Walker?I have not had chance to speak to you since my marriage, and have been too busy looking up my dad Johnnie May’s ancestors. I ended up at Haverton Hill 2 weeks ago, broke down on A19 and were fortunate enough to be offered help from Robert McAlpine highways Incident Unit, we ended up at their depot at Haverton hill Yard. They were a great bunch of blokes, they couldn’t have been more helpful, really Good Samaritans.

I remember you Ron and your sister. Your names were used to name your dads boat Ronlyn. His name was Sonny I think. The Snooks was where we had our boats and there used to be house boats further up the beach, The Lees, Wellfords, Iversons . I can remember also another couple of older people who had a boat called TekNaf,. he was an electrician in the shipyard.

My Mam Audrey and Dad Fred Burrell ran and lived at the middle house (Wellington Hotel) for 5 years in the boom time of the shipyards. Lunchtime in the pub was always busy and Dad would have me and Mam pull the ‘bankers’ (half pints ready to top up) ready for the rush of workers from the shipyards. My Dad also worked for Bee-line Coaches at the time. I started my schooling in Haverton Hill and later moved to Port Clarence when they pulled the school down. I then had to walk down to the cenotaph to catch the bus to take me to Furness Seniors. Not long after the shipyards closed down we moved to Billingham. Reading all the comments brings back a lot of memories of events and people in the area, I remember a lot of lovely people living in Port Clarence and grew up with many of them, good memories!

Mervyn Booth – Your Nan was my Great Nana – Eliza Povey (Fisher) – The family moved there some time before 1901. John and Eliza lived further down this road on Queen’s Terrace with 3 boys under 5. John worked as a steel smelter and later a Wheel Charger. Looking at the census records, most of the men in this area worked in the steel works at the turn of the last century.

Wonder if Anon or others know anything about Kenny Monaghan. He was one of our gang at the Sec.in Nelson Terrace, where we nicknamed him Rinty, after a well known Boxer of the day. Oddly enough, Ernie Lynn and I were just reminsceing about him last week. He played for Boro Juniors, Synthonia and Whitby up until about mid fifties, but lost track of him after that due to National Service etc.

James Joseph McCabe played a total of 42 games for Middlesbrough between 1937-48. another Port Lad that played for the Boro was Alex Smith who played a total of 135 games between 1961-72. A lot of good footballers came from Port Clarence to name a few were Donnelly, Monaghan, McGarth, Larkin & Tierney.

The house with the advertising boards was the Wharton family’s. Bob & Margaret, (?) Uncle Pat, Patricia, Angela and John (maybe some more I can’t remember). Bob Wharton made the best home brew in Port -reassuringly inexpensive!

I lived in the next house to the gable-end house with the advertisement posters. I have only fond memories of those days and Iāll remember Port Clarence as long as Iām able too. I wonder what the exact year was of that photograph, maybe I was I was in the house at the time because I was born in 1955. I remember the ceremonies at the cenotaph and my mum would become very emotional because her brother John (whoās name is on the cenotaph) was killed in WW2. I have read the comments from former Porters on this site, some names Iām familiar with other not so but it was lovely to share briefly with those who we shall never forget.

The war memorial was unveiled by sir Hugh and Lady Bell in 1922. It bears the names of 94 Great war dead and 46 who lost there lives in the Second world War. The Great war names include a number of brothers among these are Richard & Francis Keenan,and Stephen & Joseph Tulip. Haverton Hill and Port Clarence were both small communities, which reminds us how huge a sacrifice previous generations have made for our country. Hopefully as people pass this small memorial they may give a sideways glance and remember all those who have served,and are serving in the armed forces.

Spent so many days waiting near that memorial for the P & R coaches. One for St. Michael’s and one for Northfield, If St. Michael’s coach was full ya had to get on the Northfield bus. It used to terrify me. The coach drivers were ruthless, they would see you running toward the cenotaph and pull out and leave you behind. They showed no remorse. Anyone remenber Mr Rattigan, Mrs Baylis and Miss Troddon from St Thomas’School. Can anyone attach some information about them. I loved St.Thomas’s School (most of it). My Likes (not in order): Everyone! Little yard line up on a morning. The toffee sauce on the white blocks of ice cream. Cheese flan and chicken pie(not together).Singing ‘Far round the world’. Buying a biscuit from the teacher at breaktime. Eating chalk. Playing ‘The big ship sails through the illy ally oh’. Swimming – old billy baths. Buying stamps for the charity cards so you could name a child when it was full. Named hundreds! My Dislikes:(not in order) Going to the outside loo block in winter. Tapioca and semolina. Singing ‘Morning has broken’. Boys kicking a ball over wall from their yard. Having to cross yer legs for soooo long in Mr Bentley’s office to watch the ‘posh’ TV. The programme – ‘How we used to live’. Walking home. School Photos. HAVING TO LEAVE!

I lived at 25 Newby Terrace just about where the bus is in the photo. Kevin Greenley lived next door and the Hamiltons lived the other side. My mother was born in port in 1898, the daughter of Thomas Loughran. Two of his sons are remembered on the war memorial they both died in 1916 on the somme. As to Gerty Kernen, she was a very good teacher, tough and very strict. I am proud to have been brought up in the port and remember my time there fondly.

We lived in the ‘Top House’ the Haverton Hill Hotel in the early 60’s, my Mother jean was the landlady while my Dad Syd worked in the ICI. I remember there were houses directly opposite the pub. One great memory is that of Friday dinner time for the guys at the shipyard – my Mother and the rest of the staff would line the bar with pints of beer, when the hooter went there would be a mad dash to get to the pub, each worker would pick up a pint and a pie, throw the right money in a box on the bar, they were never short changed, always the right money. One of the papers (I think maybe the Northern Echo’ did an article on the pubs dinner time sessions, I have some great B&W photo’s of the workers entering the pub and also shots of the bar lined with pints of beer.

We loved Haverton and still live in Port. I have lived in Eton ,Oxford ,Rugby ,Cambridge and now Holly where I’ve been for 13 years. We both went to Haverton Infants and Juniors and later Campus. I have a lot of good memories of Haverton and there are still a lot of Havertonions in Port to this day. I can’t ever see me moving away unless I have to. I tried once and came back within 6 months. Our local is the Top house and I also remember Rita and Dave who ran it when I was young. I knocked about with their daughters Denise and Karen. You lived at 10 Young Street and I have found on Ancestry UK that in the 1911 census my paternal grandmother Elsie Francis Parr lived with her family at 10 Young Street, Haverton Hill. Elsie and her parents (Harry and Mary Ann Parr) and siblings, Lily, and 3 brothers, David John, Charles and William arrived from Kent so that her father could help to build the Transporter Bridge. Elsie’s brothers worked at the salt mines at Port Clarence. I decided to take my Elsie (my grandmother) to have a look around Haverton Hill but when we got there it was too late as it had been demolished!

I, along with my brothers John and Eddie, lived in Newby Terrace at the bus stop in the picture above, just a few doors down from Kevins barber shop. The shop was also a meeting place for a number of keen cyclists of which Kevin was one. I noticed the posting above from Kevin Greenly (jnr). Since attending the funeral of Kevin I have wondered what became of Kath, Kevins wife. If he can throw any light on this I would be very much obliged. Happy Days.

Reading the comments on this site makes me feel young again and brings back many happy memories. I was one of the pupils who owed much to Miss Kernan (Gert). As her niece Angela says ‘her bark was worse than her bite’ and boy could she bark. I have lived in Preston for many years, but again like Angela, I go back to Port whenever I get a chance and reminisce about how it used to be.

My Father Joseph Mckeown was born in 1922 at Port Clarence, he had 3 sisters, Veronica, Mary and Rosemary and 3 Brothers Patrick, James and John. His Father was from Tyrone and his mother was from Wicklow. Does any one remember The Mckeowns?

I remember Ronnie McKeown who lived in the end house of Laburnum Grove next to the swings in the 1960s.
