Malakoff Street is the only street off Lucan Street which is the last street on the right at bottom of Hume Street. Bit long winded but hope this helps you.
Only thing to add Keith when you turned into Lucan St. from Hume St., Malakoff St. was on the left next to the railway, the rest of the land on that side of Lucan St. was the Gasworks land.
Before my time but all the evidence points to this being Fenny St. The gasometers near Oxford St were taller (3 horizontal rings as opposed to the 2 shown in this picture) (see http://picturestocktonarchive.wordpress.com/2014/01/30/gas-works-stockton-c1949/) and they were not directly at the end of the road, also the chimney shown in the background was near the corner of Thompson St and Frederick St.
Some of the families that lived in Milton Street were the Shaws (Paddy, Kenny and Margaret), Carsons (John,Robbie and brothers), Marrons (Colin, Terry and Patrick), Hunters (William, Richard and sister), Edens, Hassetts, Macrease, Popples and West.
The Hunters were, Dick & Betty (Parents) and their children William, Joan, Richard and Madge, sadly Joan is no longer with us but her three siblings are.
As mentioned below Norma O’Brien was Bob Lewis’s wife and her parents lived at the Thompson Street end of Byron Street, she had three brothers Tom, Dick and Harry, the O’Brien family who lived round the corner in Thompson Street were the same family with Lena the mother who was a nice woman and the children Michael, Patsy and Peter.
I was wondering whether anyone had any pictures of Malakoff Street, which was near the station? My grandparents lived there ( early C20th ) and my grandad, Joseph Atkinson, worked on the railway.
Margaret Boyd . . . I have about a dozen photographs of Malakoff Street – most c.1945; some 1950’s and one Victorian. Please get in touch if you are still there . . .
I know this is late so I don’t know if this is even a viable link – do you have the Victorian picture of Malakoff Street? My great-grandparents lived there at number 16 in 1891.
Hi Derek the building was called THE WESTBOURNE which was the gasometer side of the lock-up garage.I remember you & Billy Nugent, also George & Trevor Buttle who lived next door to Billy, then Ray,Gordon & Derek Owens & Paddy Shaw from Milton Street, just a few of THE GASHOUSE LADS who done the BONDDY RAIDING for the bonfire. The waste land which we called the common & there were a few in the area,I wonder if this was the result of bombing from the W.W.2.
Hi Len you are right my grandma @ grandad lived in Fenny Street, they lived in the ground floor in the last building on the right on the corner of Frederick St. one of my friends was BILLY NUGENT whose mams house was on the corner of MILTON STREET. Off licence was on corner of BYRON STREET opposite HARBRONS SHOP.they use to be waste land across BILLYS where we use to have our bonfires. i believe they called the building THE EASTBOURNE which was a three story building where my grandma lived. i lived in thompson street next door to GAS WORKS No21. MEMORIES
This view is Fenny Street,on the right nearest the gasometer is Fredrick Street, the lock up garage,Byron Street with the corner shop, the back street then Milton Street. On the left where the street light is,used to be Winnie & Lizzie Harbron”s shop at the end of Allison Street.
The lock up garage in this photo, Bill Lewis who married Norma O’Brien who lived in Byron Street used to have this building when he was selling carpet cleaners, before his T.M.T. and Tranport businesses.

Hume Street took in Cardigan St. in later years, the streets in that area were named after battles in Crimean War.

Hi Anon, it was a great place to live and grow up in, as you and I know mate.
Happy day’s but alas, all gone now.
Does anyone have a photo of Emily street? I think it was near the gas works.
Please can you confirm this is Oxford St. as a different opinion is shown.

Thanks Jonathan. sorted now.
It is Fenny Street as my grand-parents lived in ground floor flat top right of picture turn right then your in Frederick Street
The road the first on the right was Milton Street, so it gives you some idea of its location to the Gasworks, hope this helps Linda Beirne.

Does anyone remember my mother Doris Waller (nee Williams)? She lived in Byron Street and was good friends with Norma O’Brian and Bob Lewis.

The side streets round the Gas Works were cobbled right upto the houses being demolished,as this photo of Fenny St and Milton St shows in 1962.
