The Stockdale family were farmers and lived out at Hilton. Prince Stockdale was 32 in 1850.
He had quite a ride to get to Stockton to play cricket, does this show that he was a good player, or that Stockton was the only team in the area for cricket enthusiasts?
O Hind could be Oliver Hind. 1861 Census: age 28, a whitesmith and bell hanger living at 6 West Street, Stockton. Born 1832 died 1897. J Ayre could be John Ayre. 1861 Census: a tallow chandler, age 28, living at 28 East Street, Stockton. Born 1833 died 1900. Both of these people were sons of two of my great great great granfathers. Unfortunately we can only speculate.
I strongly suspect that J. Ayre and O. Hind are related and appear on my family tree. Other regulars on the site who have Hinds and Ayres from the Smith Street area on their family trees will perhaps be as delighted as me with this find.
Whilst researching “The Cricket Grounds of Durham” for the Association of Cricket Statisticians and Historians” I came across this photograph in “Heavisides”s Almanack for 1911” The author, Michael Heavisides, describes it as “A Stockton Eleven and supporters fifty years ago” – that is to say c1861 – He also includes the following caption; “Read from left to right- Percy Dyke, T.Crosby, J.Ayre,T.Dyke,Jos.Dodds,T.Darnton, Jon. Joy, T.Garbutt, Prince Stockdale, Dr.Richardson, – Beaver, T.W.Hornby, T.Robinson, W.Halton, Tommy Marshall, N.Darnton, O.Hind. I believe the photo was taken at Stockton C.C.”s ground at Portrack Lane, their home ground from c1849 – c 1870.
