The dairy was not so old being built in about 1950. When I was late for work, I was given a lift up to the town in a milk float by the driver, who saw me running and stopped to let me on. Although we were going up hill I would guess we were doing about 10mph.
In one way it was a ‘cool’ place to work i.e. bloody freezing. I was a milkman for Stockton Co-Op for 2 years in the mid 70’s until I got almost killed by a Cleveland Transit double decker on my way in one morning, wrote my lovely MG Midget off and put me in North Tees General for 3 months.
During my years working in the building department of the Stockton Co-op, the dairy was one of the premises we did maintenance on. It was a very cold environment to work in, not one we looked forward to. The building is now in the midst of being demolished, another little piece of old Stockton disappears.
My dad Dennis Bull used to work here in the 80″s. I used to go there every morning and get our milk, it was a cool place to go visit for a seven year old.
This was the Co-op dairy and to the best of my knowledge was active until recently May 2005. I used to see electric milk floats limping back to the depot after their delivery, on my way into work. A few old floats were in the courtyard until recently. Currently its all fenced of, is the council intending to develop on the site?
