The loco at the centre of the photo is a class 50 diesel electric, which would have been based somewhere on the Western Region at the time, next to it, it looks like a class 24 diesel (From the North Yorkshire Moors Railway?) and on the extreme left is the back of the class J72 steam tank engine which is owned by the North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group.
British Rail Open Day From diary Sept 20th 1992 :- With Puppets to Thornaby freight yard for Rail Open Day, warm and sunny, clouding over about 3-00pm. We arrived at 1-00pm , have problems getting to our “pitch” as the place is crowded . Thousands of enthusiasts walking about and viewing the dozen or more locomotives, both steam and diesel. Some “in-steam”, including the star of the show “Blue-Peter”. This causes us a bit of a problem as we are near this famous loco and visitors to the footplate sound off the piercing steam whistle as they went through the cab. There were over 50 railway memorabilia and book-stalls. A very enjoyable day, there should be more in this “Town that Changed the World” **Was unable to go to the opening by Princess Diana of The Princees of Wales Bridge on Wed 16th , as I was at Newtown “Victorian School -Day !
I served my apprenticeship here, 1992-1996!
