  1. Chaumont-Rambert, Newell, Rhodes and Barrett families… I am interested to know the origins of your Holligan ancestors, re birthplace, country of origin etc. My own name has its origins in Ireland, late 18th century, in the Co Carlow area.

    Would welcome comment, observation, information.

  2. I have been doing my Casey family tree, thanks to some lovely people I have met along the way. This very morning, 17th September 2010, I went to Oxbridge cemetery and stood at my great great grandparents graves James & Mary Ann Casey.

  3. Thanks John , I know the Duncans had ships on the river Tees a lot of years ago, and I know they come from Scotland. I’m finding this family tree harder than I thought lol…. my grandsfather John Duncan married a Winnie Conway from Bowesfield Lane, if I find more info out John I will let you know.

  4. Joy, my mum was an Osborne from Ewbank St,where a number of the Osbornes, Smithsons and Cockins lived. My father was from the Tollcross area of Glasgow,I hope this helps you.

    • My wife is descended from Hannah Matilda Marks b1900 (step daughter of William George Osborne b1879) and married to Robert Cockin b1894, living at 49 Ewbank Street, Stockton.

    • My wife is a descendant from Hannah Matilda Marks b1900 (step-daughter of William George Osborne b1879) and married to Robert Cockin b1894 and lived at 49 Ewbank Street, Stockton in 1911.

  5. hello john duncan ,,, i havent got much information on the duncan family, my mams father was called john duncan, and her mother was called winnie , they lived 67 pearson street parkfield, her sisters wer ida, mable, laura, hellen, john and jimmy, my mothers father was bred n born thornaby, and her mother winnie conway was bred and born parkfield ,

  6. Moira, in case you are looking a little into Gladys, she was one of ten children whose parents were Fred and Maud Birch who lived in Buchanan St. Gladys had a twin brother, Harold. They were born in 1916. Harold and family lived in Grays Rd. Gladys lived in addresses already mentioned. She died in 1993.

  7. Lynne, your Gt Grandfather George was actually born 6 April 1852, his brother William Henry was born 11 October 1853 and is my husbands Gt Grandfather. So their father George born circa 1825 is Gt2 grandfather to both of you, to be precise you are third cousins. From your comments I am still trying to work out where the Conquests come in. Gladys was a very good friend of my mother in law, maybe because they were vaguely related. As you can see from my reply Emily was not your grandmother’s sister, but her cousin, born to William Henry in 1879. You can get my email address from Picture Stockton.

  8. Ken Rhodes, re Alf Holligan. I don’t know much about the Holligans. I have on my family tree an Alfred R Holligan born 1895 whose father was Josiah Holligan born 1860. Josiah had a brother George born 1853 who was my greatgrandfather. Could Alf be Alfred R or a descendant?
Gran Cooper re Victor Conquest. My father was George Robert, he was the only one of five children born to William Thomas Conquest and his first wife to reach adulthood. My grandfather then married Mary Margaret. In later years he lived in Rydal Rd until his death. Blodwen was one of Victors sisters.
Moira Murphy – My grandmother Lizzie Jane Holligan born 1878 lived at 43 Waverly St in 1881 she had a sister Emma born 1876 – could she be your husbands grandmother?

  9. My friend is called Holligon and not Holligan and have no connection to the Conquest family. Gran I would be very interested to know about my conection to Gladys. Email address available from Stockton team.

    • My late father (Frederick William Holligon of 7 Wensley Road) was the brother of Alfred Holligon and son of Josiah Gibson Holligon. He was uncle to Alfred who was married to Mavis and lived in Fairfield, and also uncle to Kenneth from Kensington Road, Stockton.

  10. Ken Rhodes comments are correct re. Dennison St Hairdressers. May be of interest that George Chetwynd stayed with Gladys and Victor at the time he got elected as Labour MP for Stockton in place of Harold McMillan. For anybody who remembers those days they always owned a couple of Airdale dogs.
From some of your previous comments Ken, you might not know it, but one of your family is directly related to Gladys.

  11. I have a friend who lives in Hartburn called Holligan, or is it Holligon? She is the widow of Alf Holligan who played for West End and later became a local referee. He was an Oxbridge lad and if the spelling is right could be the connection you are looking for Lynne. I lived in Parkfield and remember the Conquest hairdressing shop in Dennison Street. I have a book called BOMBED BUT BOOMING DENNISON STREET and it gives details of the people who lived in Dennison Street from 1880 till the 1990s and Victor Thomas and Gladys are mentioned living in no 2 Dennison Street fom 1945 till 1962, based I think on the various censuses of that time.

    • My father (Frederick Holligon) was the brother of Alf Holligon senior, so uncle to the late Alf and his brother Kenneth. Alf and Kenneth were brought up in Kensington Road, Oxbridge.

  12. Lynne, I have been reading the ongoing discussions about the Conquest family with interest as my husband was born in Waverley Street, but did not know there was any connection with the Holligan family. Emily Holligan was my husband’s grandmother. I have done quite a lot to the family tree for him and his sister so please get in touch for any info you require. Email address at Picture Stockton.

  13. Ref. Victor Conquest; After looking at a few census returns it seems to be that Edith Alice was an Aunt of Victor, who was born in 1911 in Suffolk St. Parents were William and Mary Margaret. I am guessing that your father was Herbert Lawrence, Lynne. Elsdon St, Sheraton St and Leybourne terrace are some older places the Conquest family lived, I am sure you know where they are.
My apologies if you are fully aware already of all of the above.
I lived in Grays Road as a child and vaguely have memories that Victor had some relation living on the corner with Windermere Rd. The name Blodwyn is maybe relevant?
Victor was a bit of a ladies man in his day.

  14. Lynne, as previously mentioned, Victor was an uncle of mine. Cliff Thornton was correct when saying where my aun Gladys and cousin Lyle, an only child, lived.
I do now know where Lyle lives and should you wish I could assist. He does not live in Teesside area.

  15. Victor Conquest was my uncle. He was my late fathers half brother as their father remarried. His first wife died shortly after the birth of my father. I know where some of the family graves are in Oxbridge cemetary. I lived opposite the cemetary on Oxbridge Lane until I married in 1969. I am researching the Conquest and Holligan families and would love to hear from anyone who could help.
Edith Alice Conquest married Hugh Barraclough. She died in 1918 and is buried near the mortuary. Her father William Conquest is in the same grave.

  16. I’m doing the family tree on my mothers side – the duncans and the conways. My mam was born and bred in Pearson Street, Stockton. She has recently died and I’m trying to find out where her babies are buried, they where born at Sedgfield – I don’t know how you go about finding out. Also I’m doing a family tree on my fathers side, Michael Mannion, born and bred in Portrack. I’m trying to find were his great grandparents are buried, Michael Mannion born 1851 in Ireland and Margaret Gordon, they both died in 1900s. Could someone tell me how I can find out where they are? Thank you.

  17. Re the conquest family: you can also ring the bereavement services section of stockton council on 01642 527341/2. give them the names and dates of death of the people you are trying to trace and if they”re buried in any of stockton council”s cemeteries they will give you the relevant grave numbers. Then go into the cemetery in question and find a member of staff – they should be able to locate the grave(s) for you. Whilst you are on the phone to Bereavement services , you can also arrange a time and date when you want to visit the cemetery (if prefered), and they will arrange for a member of cemeteries staff to meet you.

  18. Re CONQUEST family – you will find that there are several entries for members of the Conquest family in the website run by Stockton Registry office. Google for the Stockton Roots website and then use the site”s search facility to look for people listed in births, marriages, deaths and burials.

  19. I remember that a Mrs Conquest and her teenage son, Lyle, lived in Hartburn Lane, Stockton, in the 1950s. In the 1960s they moved into a newly built detached house at the top of Linden Avenue. My wife recalls that there was a Lyn Conquest attending Grangefield Grammar School for girls in the 1960s.

  20. Victor Conquest was an uncle of mine, he was married to one of my mothers sisters, Gladys. She had the ladies hairdressers in Dennison St. Winnie, another sister, had a similar shop in Dovecot St opposite the General Post Office. Victor dealt in hairdessing equipment and in later life had premises on the main road at the bottom of Parliament St. Gladys and Victor had one son, Lyle, though I don”t know his whereabouts.

  21. I can remember a VICTOR Conquest who used to have a hairdressers shop on what I think was Nelson terrace. Could that name help your research? I don”t know of any other Conquests in Stockton.

  22. I have always been interested in my late mother”s family. Can anyone provide any information at all on the Conquest family, particularly Edith who died in 1918 and is buried at Stockton Cemetery. Any info about past or present family members would be appreciated.

  23. You can try the site stocktonroots for people buried in stockton cemeteries, click on the tab burials, if you just put the surname in it gives you a list of names to choose from. It tells you which cemetery, how old they were and when they were buried. Its much easier to find where the graves are in Teesside archives with this information Hope this helps

  24. Teesside Archives will give you a plan of the cemetery for the cost of a photocopy. They also have the Burial Register on microfilm which will give you the plot number of the graves. The plan isn”t much good though without the grave numbers and vice versa. The cemetery is quite large and it”s a good idea to take a spouse or sympathetic friend while grave hunting.

  25. I have no fewer than 26 Bage”s buried in Oxbridge and am hoping to visit next week. The cost of getting the grave numbers & a plan is prohibitive due to the numbers. Can someone point me to a grave plan? How many gravestones are there? Is it feasable to walk around them all to check for my lot? Thanks for any info.

  26. My Great Great Grandfather William Prosser died 1882 was buried according to my relations as was his wife in 1899, I was wondering if anyone can tell me if the grave stones still exist and are readable. If they are I may come up and have a look.

  27. To Colleen Butler, The cemetery is stil there and in use. your grandmother”s grave should still be there as there are earlier burials than 1894 to see. As far as locating the grave is concerned, there will be records somewhere but how you will go about finding them is not known to me. I”m sure there be advice from some one in the know! good luck

  28. my greatgrandmother Elizabeth Ann Barker was buried in Oxbridge Cemetery in June, 1894. I am an Australian visiting the area later in 2008. She lived in Adam/s Street, Stockton on Tees. Would anyone know if the cemetery and possible gravestones are still there. many thanks

  29. My ancesters are the Eells and Watson families of Stockton, Durham. William Eells was born 1846 at Norton and his wife Elizabeth Watson at Thornaby. They are my Great Great Grandparents. William was a baker for many years. In 1881 he lived at 13 Thornaby Rd, Thornaby, York, England (I believe that the street has now been renumbered due to road works) and in 1871 lived at 2 Oxford St with his father Thomas (miller). I am interested in burials at this cemetery for my family ancesters. I have a posting on the Rootsweb genealogy message board if anyone would like to contact me. The photos are great. Thanks.

  30. Any links for a James Francis Hassett born 1872 died 1909 in Devonshire was married to a Johanna Hassett in Plymouth but she died in 1902 he remarried a blanche davy in Chudleigh Devon but died in 1909 in Chudleigh

  31. Hello I have a picture of my grandparents grave in the cemetery Vera Henrietta Lewis died 18th April 1967 and David Lewis died 1st march 1968, I also believe my great grandmother Harriett smith is in the graveyard as well I was told somewhere near my grandmother but I”m not sure if a headstone is up can someone help me find where Harriett is she died on 14th June 1958, 75 years. Also I had family living at 11 Hill Street what would be the cemetery for this area as I have family also by the surname Lewis as I live in Australia I have no idea as I haven’t been since I was a small child thank you for any help Jacqui

  32. I am searching the Longburn family and from records I have there are various members buried in this cemetery (Oxbridge Cemetery Stockton) taken from the National Burial Index of England. I would love to know if there are any headstones of the Longburn family in the cemetery. This would be a wonderful help to put the family together. I believe that a lot of the Longburn children died young. I do have ancestor Thomas Longburn buried 24 April 1891 and wondered if he had a headstone. Would be so grateful to any help as I put the family together here in Australia

  33. Dave Hardman – seen your comment about living in the house at the cemetery was this Durham Road – my granddad worked there many years ago I have a photo somewhere which I will find and put on this site his name was Edward Vickers

  34. Thanks again Benny that was one of the angels I checked out a fortnight ago when looking for the original. I told my dad last night about your help and he thinks he knows your name. Then again he is a daft old thing. We have promised ourselves to visit the cemetery this weekend when I am down to visit him.

  35. Deborah I asked my brother about the Angel at the Durham Road Cemetery Gates and he said it was on a private grave.

  36. Thanks Benny and Martin for the information and help. I am visiting Stockton this weekend and will be taking me dad to the cemetery to let him pay his respects and he can try and look over the area and see if he can remember the vicinity actually being there. If not I will use the information supplied by you Martin.

  37. Deborah, log on to the Stockton on Tees Council Website and put in Cemeterys on the Search facility, then look up Family Reseach. There is helpful information on there and should have records on the grave plots.

  38. Deborah I seem to remember a large angel at the gates entrance next to the Caretakers house, just as you entered the cemetery from Durham Road, I have heard that the house has been demolished, may be the Angel went at the same time. I will ask my brother who lived directly opposite the gates for many years.

  39. My dad seems to think there used to be a large angel in Durham Road cemetery where they used to bury newborn babies who died at birth or lived very short lives. He carried my sister (August 1960) in her small white coffin and he seems to remember her being laid to rest under an angel. Just last week when visiting the area and wanting to lay flowers I couldn”t find this area and ended up putting flowers just in an area given over to babies. He thinks the angel was moved I would like to know if there is a specific area to be able to pay my respects. Any ideas anyone?
