  1. According to my mother, June Harris (nee Dobson) the bakery was called Ellis’s and was ran by 2 sisters. She recalls being sent there by her dad to wait for the early morning bread – best in Stockton supposedly…..

    • Spot on Ian, the two Ellis Sisters did bake the best bread buns in the area. Browns Sheet Iron Works was across the road from their tiny shop, and you could smell the bread baking. Dick Brown would send me over for buns, it was war time and we were rationed to half a dozen. The ladies were elderly then yet would be up at dawn baking then serve until sold out around noon. Best of all they also baked a few cakes and I always got one free, delicious. The Bakery would most likely have been closed had H&S existed in those far off days. A dangerous world in many ways yet still very fond memories.

  2. Recall the Army and Navy Store; in the late 50’s I remember my mam taking me there to buy me a windcheater as a treat after having an injection at the clinic in Francis street, Thornaby. It was a lovely shade of blue and I remember it being particularly inflexible – I struggled to move my arms freely – and it wasn’t because of the injection; it also seemed to have a distinct rubbery smell. Despite that, I loved it (we didn’t get much in those days).
The store was the place to buy my jeans as a young teenager as I found the boys jeans were the best fit for me – no such luck nowadays I’m afraid.

  3. I remember opposite Stewart”s on the left-hand corner, was Curry”s, at which I brought a Black and White portable TV. I once got a Levi jacket and Wrangler jeans from the Army and Navy Stores, as well as Peter”s in the High Street. Later on in the 1980″s was Topsoft Computers, on the site of Army and Navy Stores. Just next door to Army & Navy was a shop that repaired shaver”s etc and further up opposite the Red Lion was a baker”s shop and the smell of freshly baked bread. The Stag Inn is in Silver Street, which I always think was related to Reindeer. Stewart”s was later Chelsea Girl in the 1980″s.

  4. Ged I think you are mistaken, the Stag Was on the other side of stockton High Street, the Pub you are refering to is the Reindeer I think.

  5. This was probably my favourite street in Stockton as it contained my regular watering hole, the Red Lion. The Red Lion can be seen in the left foreground of the photo. Further down Ramsgate, on the left, was the Green Tree pub and almost directly opposite the Tree was the Stag Inn. Bottom right was Stewarts Clothiers. Ramsgate was also home to the Army & Navy Stores where my parents bought my first real tent. I doubt very much if the tent had ever been intended for an Army life as the very first time it rained myself and my pals got soaked to the skin. Still it was a vast improvement on its predecessor which was an old blanket draped over my mother`s clothes-horse. Despite the tent`s limitations we kids used it on umpteen occassions to “camp” out in our back garden. The tent was made for two but we regularly accommodated five. My mother would have to open her bedroom window during the night and call for less noise due to our constant giggling and other noises. I can remember that entry into the tent was only for those with a strong stomach.
