  5. My grandad was George Cuthbert Smith, who was – to my knowledge – brother to Ralph (Bullet) and Valentine. George’s children were Evelyn; Norman and Ernest (my father).

    • Hello Susan. If your grandad was brother to Ralph Smith he is my mothers uncle, my Grandmother was his sister, I have an old photo of her and her daughter.did . I used to live in Middlesbrough but I did not meet Ralph, contact me through this site, Tom

      • George Cuthbert Smith (my grandad) married Elizabeth and they all lived in Monkland Street. I left Middlesbrough in 1986. I wasn’t aware there was a sister to George, Ralph and Valentine until coming across this site. George died in December 1952.

        • Was your grandmother called Elizabeth Tom? I have been doing some research on my great granddads family (Ralph bullet Smith) and I have found out that he was one of 9 siblings there was a George born, 1883 Robert born 1885, John born 1886, Tom born 1888, William born 1889, Elizabeth born 1891, Valentine born 1894, Philip born 1897, and Ralph bullet Smith my great granddad born 1899. Their parents were John Smith born 1860 and Sarah Ann Smith was Horsley born 1861

          • Hi Melanie. We’ve now done a full family tree on the Ancestry.com site. George was my grandfather – plus we’ve found out a lot more about the others. I found another cousin still living in Middlesbrough that I never knew about. We’re now back to the 1500’s with the Smith side of the family. I don’t know if you can send me your email address on here, but if you can, I can add you to my list of ‘Guests’ on the ancestry site, and you can have a look. Tom Ingham is a guest on there too.

          • Elizabeth Smith was my grandmother, her children were Thomas , Ella , William , Ruth, Velma , Audrey, Irene, Lucritia,( my mam ) Pattie, Elsie, and Lillian, all lived in Unthank Street, Middlesbrough.

I have found out some more information about my great uncle Ralph Bullet Smith – type ‘bullet smith stockton footballer’ into Google then look for ‘giants of the game’; this will give a record of his playing history. Also the owner of the Yorshire Coble pub in Redcar has a collection of photos and papers relating to Ralph which he is willing to sell. I have some photos of Ralph receiving the amateur cup.   10. Ralph"bullet" Smith was my grandad’s brother. My Mum, Iris May Smith, spoke fondly of him, her Uncle Ralph. My Grandad was Val Smith.

    • Do you have any history about what happened to Valentine Smith? My brother is doing a Family Tree, and we can find very little about him. He was out great uncle. Thanks Sue Smith.

      • Valentine Smith married Mini Hewitt. They had two daughters, my mum, Iris May Smith and her younger sister Linda who had two children Margaret and Mark. Iris married John Summerhill and had two chidren, myself (Christopher) and my sister Heather. Ralph [Bullet] Smith was an International Amateur Footballer an inside right or center forward playing for Stockton in the twenties and thirties in the old Northern league ,The team always played in red and black quarters and home games were played on the Victoria ground at the side of Ellsdon street and the Cemetry the other side in Oxbridge, He lived in Tarren street middlesbrough in the Newport area and worked at the Newport Engine sheds as a driver, He had a son called ralph who worked at the same sheds as a firedroper and steam raiser some years later 1951 He was a bit like is Dad stocky and tough .
