The crowds were starting to decline with the programme stating the biggest crowd that season against Darlington Reserves drew less than a thousand compared to the 3,000 plus in the early fifties. But a lot of Northern League clubs do well if they get 250 spectators present day.
David Dale, I am doing similar research for Whitby Town. Do you have player records for Stockton FC – can we exchange info on past players if possible please? The Picture Stockton team have my email address.
Sad to read on here that Phil Lewis may have passed away. I would have loved to have met him again as I have not seen him since about 1973. Phil got me into speedway and I will always be grateful to him for that. My father Harry Harland died in 1986 from bowel cancer but I used to occasionally bump into some of his mates: Billy Mitchell ran a newsagents in Northcote Street for years, he was always a funny bloke. He built his own house just up the road from Fairfield Library. Barney Malone seems to be elusive too. He used to live in a house near Jacksons Bakery (long since demolished to make way for the A66 bypass). I would love to hear from anyone who used to frequent the Eaglescliffe pub around 1969/1974 as my dad used to live there (lol). We lived in No.16 Hartburn Village for a few years and remember people like Gary Atkins (whose dad ran the newsagents opposite the Stockton Arms about 1970). Gary emigrated to South Africa about 1972, Kendall Wrightson, Kim Stafford and Colin/Alexandra Thompson are other names I recall.
Hi Kevin McCullough nice to see you in print again bringing back memories of your youth.Although I visited you mams house in Oxbridge quite a lot in my younger days to go out with Margeret and I formed a lasting relationship with Kath and Jack till they both passed away,I never know of you till Kath twisted Jacks arm to go and visit you in the States because Jack liked the sun and was doutful about your weather over there but he enjoyed the trip. Its about time we heard from Margeret again to pass on some past memories so e-mail her and lets see her online.happy New Year Kevin.
Pat, I feel I have to join my good friend Kevin McCullough in remembering your sisters Mary and Mardi Quinn and their friend Jo McCue. I too knew Mardi and Jo from the Cuthbert”s youth club, and from Tito”s, though I never worked there. I also knew Dave Noble as I worked for a while (just on Saturdays) at Weaver to Wearer on Linthorpe Road in Middlesbrough when he worked there, before he met Mardi, and later on at the night clubs. I remember Mary when she sang with Phil Lewis at the Redcar Jazz Club – she would do oldies like “All of Me” and “Amy my Boy” and sometimes add her own slightly off-colour lyrics. We all had the hots for Mary! I don”t know if Mardi and Jo will remember me now, but tell them it is Jim who hung out with Felix McCoy and Tony O”Connor.
Hi again Kevin McCullough M&M”s sister here. I talked to Mardi on Monday, she still lives in Yarm and yes Joan(Jo as we all call her) is still very much part of the clan, she actually lives a couple of hundred yards from me and is still in touch with Mardi. She does remenber you as Flint. Happy days as she says. Love this site as I think I”ve said before. Talk to you soon Regards M&M”s sister
Hi John Mcalees, Mardi&Mary”s sister here. Nice to hear from you. I remember Kath when she used to go to the Norton Bing, sadly no longer there (new flats there now) Just thought I”d let you know I now go to the hairdressers that used to be Diannes, run by (I believe your daughter-in-law Vicki). excellent hairdresser. I”ll tell Mardi I”ve been talking to you online. Regards Pat Watson
Hi there Pat Watson, Thanks for responding to my post. This website is fun for us ex-pats who live abroad, it keeps us in touch with our past and also lets us glimpse the present back in Stockton. Yes, I did indeed know Dave, we worked together often. Also Joan McCue, I don”t know if she is still part of Mardi”s life . They used to be very close. This Stockton website points out what a small world it really is nowadays. There is only six degrees of seperation. I have seen so many names and places that were part of my past. With your sister Mardi and Joan I go all the way back to St. Cuthberts club when we were teenagers, dancing the night away on Yarm Rd. until we became mature adults, dancing and gambling the night away at Tito”s , which is also mentioned on this page. Next time I am back in Teesside we will have to have a cocktail and I can tell you some stories about your sisters.
My wife kath used to go to dianae”s hairdresserers on norton high st.she also went to the norton bingo, she knows mardi very well and asks you to say hello.i remember mary from the fiesta.many years ago.last time we saw mardi she was living in yarm .she still there
Hi Kevin McCullough, I did reply to your message dated 31/12/07, but I may”nt have sent it correctly as it has”nt appeared on this page to date. However, I did tell you that she was”nt on line but I did get in touch with her daughter in Jacksonville and told her to pass on your regards. The thing is. I”m sure she said she was going on a working cruise to Jamaica (singing, of course) and could quite possibly be out of the U.S.A at this moment in time.but I will be seeing Mardi on Monday of next week and will tell her you wished to be remembered to her. Mardi married Dave(Harvey)Noble. who you must remember, YES??????? So keep in touch and I will pass on any news of Mary to you. Regards Pat M&M”s sister
Hello Pat Watson (nee quinn) , How nice to see Mary Quinn mentioned. I used to be good friends with both of your sisters ,Mardi and Mary. We all worked together as croupiers for Baileys Org. at Titos,Marimba,Contessa etc. Mary was both a great looker and a great singer. If you talk to her tell her “Flint” says hello.I too live in the States now in California, if Mary gets on line I would love to hear from her. She can get my e-mail from ex-pats in the evening gazette or from the folks at Picture Stockton website.
For Barry Robinson, you don”t know me (as they say) but I was browsing these pages and it”s almost a year since your message. I was just wondering if you remember my sister Mary Quinn(red hair) who did a bit of singing with Phill Lewis&the Red Hot Peppers? I”m not quite sure how long she was with them tho”.Any how she now lives in the U.S.A.(Louisiana) and is not yet online, altho” her daughter Who lives in Jacksonville is. If you do remember her, I”m sure she would like to hear from you. p.s. I”m not 100% certain but I”m sure I heard the Phil Lewis had passed away (could be wrong tho”)
Hi David, Would it be possible to email me a copy of Stockton FC (mikesell@shaw.ca). I also played for the club in the 80″s under John Hope and Keith Wren when they were in the Wearside League, and then again in the 90″s when in the Northern League. I”d be interested to know a bit about my predecessors. I”ll be back in the UK in July 2006 so if your history is papercopy then I can arrange to pick up. Thanks in advance
Hi David Dale, being an ex player with Stockton FC I would love to get a copy of your history of the Stockton Football Club. You can contact me at bennybee@bigpond.net.au. or phone on 00 61 3 9876 3185.
Delighted to see the images of a grand old football club where I spent many happy times.Being a keen supporter of grass roots football I have recently compiled a history of the old Stockton club which you are welcome to use if required
Bob, I tried to get Charlie Pickering”s telephone number but there is no-one listed under that name in the telephone book that lives in Marske. How ironic that a relative of Phil Lewis” lives in the same place as myself! Regards Steve Harland
Re the whereabouts of Phil Lewis.I remember Phil and I working together one day on a particularly tedious job in a particularly dismal plant at I.C.I.Both of us being about 23 years old, it was the last place on earth we wanted to be stuck in. We decided life would be much better if you could take retirement while still young enough to enjoy it, go back to work in your thirties and then work till you drop! Perhaps Phil, who I hope is still around,is still slogging away somewhere. Incidentally, does anyone else remember Phil coming to Trinity school in pony and trap driven by his grandfather Alf Lewis ex mayor of Stockton?
Hi Bob You are dead right about the ERM and how the name came about. I was there at the time trying to figure out a name for the band and ERM came about just as you described. By the way Bob i never went to Korea. I am very anxious to try and trace Phil Lewis and it seems to me that perhaps the best way is through his cousin Charlie Pickering. Could you e-mail me Bob on bensywensy90@msn.com. I would really like to communicate with you. I now live in Burbank USA about 3 miles from from Hollywood and still playing the piano as a Cocktail pianist in local hotels and restaurants.OK yes but nothing to compare with Phil Lewis and his Red Hot Peppers
Hi Steve. I was good friends with Phil Lewis, John Alison, Billy Mitchell Charlie Pickering. They all worked at Head Wrightsons and played football for Primrose Hill and drank in the Red Lion. Barry Robinson I met a couple of times but he went to Korea . I believe he was quite a pianist. Phil 1st band was I believe called ERM. They could not come upon a name for it and everyone was saying erm! erm! all the time so that is how it was named. Re. trying to get in touch with Charlie Pickering who is Phils cousin. Charlie lives in Marske and is in the phone book.
Hi Steve…This is Barry Robinson and I remember your father Harry very very well. So well in fact that I used to go out with him three or four times a week along with Phil Lewis and John Allinson. Your father Steve was a great guy,a lovely sense of humour and a fanatic supporter of the Boro. I always enjoyed being in his company. it is a long time ago now Steve, but I shall forever remember Harry..he was very very special.
What a nice surprise it was to read about the existence of Phil Lewis and the Red Hot Peppers on this website. I am the son of Robert Henry Harland known more commonly as “Harry” to his mates who used to frequent the Eaglescliffe pub back in the late 1960s and early 1970s. My father lived in Westcott Street when he first got married but upon his divorce in 1966 he subsequently lived in Hartburn Village between 1966 and 1971 before remarrying and living in Camden Street from 1971 to 1980. He used to work for Darchem Engineering in Stillington and was good friends with Phil for many years. I wonder if Barry Robinson remembers “Harry”? My dad knew loads of people. Jack and Bob Young spring to mind because they had a daughter called Jackie who went to the same school as me in Fairfield. John Allinson rings a bell, didn”t he own a garage on Yarm Lane selling second hand cars? My dad never drove but we often used to go down there on a Saturday morning. We also used to pay a visit to John Oates the butcher in Bowesfield Lane. There was Bill Mitchell too, who ran a newsagents at the bottom of Northcote Street and there was a mysterious figure known as Barney Malone. Mine hosts at the Eaglescliffe were Gordon & Sally who originally came from Leeds. Quite a few of them used to have season tickets at the “Boro. My introduction to Phil was of this rather eccentric bright ginger haired bloke who spoke not unlike former England and Everton footballer, Alan Ball. Phil, who lived in Arncliffe Avenue, used to take me and my father down to the speedway racing at Cleveland Park in 1969. I always wondered why Phil disappeared halfway through a season but my father explained that Phil was a professional musician and played at several seaside resorts during the summer, returning once the season was over. Phil gave me a scrapbook from the 1940s which covered the activities of Frank & Jack Hodgson, Fred “Kid” Curtis, “Crusty” Pye and Herby King. I”ve treasured it ever since and still watch speedway racing. I understand from a friend that Phil”s departure from the area was rather swift but I too would be grateful to anyone who would know the current whereabouts of Phil, if indeed he his still alive.
My wife’s grandfather Alf Brown who lived in Dovecote Street, Stockton and was chairman of Stockton FC in the Victoria ground days.
