The top photo shows the view of Stockton station from Nolan St but the houses have been demolished, same as the second photo of the gas works bridge shows land which was the top of Hume St & the gas works site in Lucan St.
My father recently moved into the old railway station that has been taken over by the Darlington Railway housing association they have kept the outside of the buildings and obviously the building is listed and I have to say they have been very sympathetic in trying to keep the look of the original building.
If Mr Hutchinson would like to go to the homepage, click on the “Search database” facilty and type in “recent” there are some photographs of Stockton Station taken in 2004.
I agree with Allan Wealleans, all of the photos present a dismal picture of the once busy Stockton Station. The picture top-right shows the footbridge where I did most of my train-spotting as a kid. I last saw this area in 1965 so it is hard for me to imagine the desolate scenes depicted in the photos. What is there now? Better still, does anybody have photos of this area after redevelopment or does it still look like this?
What a sad, uncared for image these pictures present. Particularly the shot on the bottom right. That wonderful arched roof, gone forever. Presumably we must blame it on the advent of the motor car and the Beeching Axe, among other factors.
