  1. is the shoulder of mutton inn not 102 High Street which became wimpy bar and whimpole pub, exchanges, legends and now the George? The windows match the view of 102 High Street

  2. Whilst searching for family info from census records website, I came across a mention of a relative as residing in Shoulder of Mutton yard, Stockton-on-Tees -a Mr.Henry Garbutt (Agricultural Labourer), his wife Rebecca and their 5 sons. They all resided there in the 1851 census records, but sadly Rebecca doesn”t in the 1861 census. In the 1851 census they and their children appear to be the only residents listed at the time. In 1861 there were a larger number of families. 1871 census shows that my, believed to be relatives, are residing elsewhere at this time i.e. Lawson Street, Stockton-on-Tees.

  3. Alan, Yes you are right. Perhaps another member of the Eden family used this address. I know that Sampson Eden was their in the 1861 and 1871 censuses though.

  4. My great great great grandfather and his family lived at number 103 High Street in the 1861 and 1871 censuses. He was a hairdresser called Sampson Eden. He lived there with his wife Ann Eden formely Hutchinson and children Annie Maria Eden [my great great grandmother] and John William Eden [who became a hairdresser as well]. I notice two things about the picture, firstly the black sign on the building on the left has the name Eden on it, although I cannot read the rest of it. Secondly the name of the inn. In 1841 Sampson Eden was living in Shoulder Of Mutton Yard. What a fantastic find.
