  1. Derek, Patrick Sullivan was Patrick’s (who died in the WW1) grandad – Mick’s great granddad was William, Patrick’s first son

    • Thanks Pauline, i was talking to Micky Alinson the other day as I was walking down into Stockton, he must have came across my postings and saw some of the stories I’d had printed in Remember When, when I mentioned Patrick Sullivan being his grandfather { not gt grandfather } i just couldn’t understand, now I do, thanks. Since last talking to you I discovered more about my grandads time with Kings Own Scotish Borderes, When grandad went over the top on 1st July 1916 some 50 thousand casualties were recorded for 1st day of battle, grandad was one of them, badly wounded in left leg by bullet and shrapnel, Patrick died just days after. I wonder if Patrick would have heard his best mate was wounded on the 1st day, and how long it took for grandad to learn of Patrick’s death, so sad to lose so many young men.
Did you ever look into claiming your dads seaman’s campaign medals, do you know what ships he sailed on? I have all records of my dads, all his campaign medals and seaman’s pouch, if you need any adresses, you can contact me through picturestockton.
PictureStockton team many thanks for putting my mystery question on this great site, please keep up the great work – all the very best to you Derek
ps Pauline, I met my old mate Allan Heymen the other day, he’s not been very well, he did come and visit me several times after you contacted him on my behalf thanks.

  2. To L C Webster – Francis Casey was my Grandad, think his first wife was called Amelia Jobson. Agnes Henderson married Neil McLaughlin then Francis lived near the cattle market.

    • L C Webster, I know this is an old posting but hope you are still about, if you want to know some Casey ancestry please get in touch, picturestockton will give you my e-mail, Francis Casey the father was my g grandad, his son Francis my g uncle, have info on all the siblings of Francis & Isabella, all the best Derek

      • Micky Alinson, hope you contact me through PictureStockton to sort out the two Patrick Sullivan’s… Remember I told you my maternal great grandmother was a Murphy, well she was born a Murphy not married to one, so strangely I’ve been researching one Patrick Sullivan who was my grandad’s best mate, they were both in the trenches for the battle of the Somme, my grandad fell very badly wounded on the 1st day of battle, his best mate Patrick would be killed in action some days later. Then to find your grandad was a Patrick Sullivan who lived at the same addresses as grandad’s mate, who moved to Swainby rd after the old areas were demolished. They must have been closely related, I hope we can sort out how.

        All the best Micky, Derek.
ps I have Patrick Sullivans medal card, his service records were destroyed during bombing in the second world war.

  3. Snowdons yard was were my grandad Robert Casey lived after he married my gran Beatrice Warhurst Kirk June 6th 1917. Grandad lived at 9 Housewifes lane, joined the K.O.S.B 1912, left the army due to wounds 1918. My gran Beatrice lived at 6 Alice st. Think they set up home together in Snowdons yard, then in late 20s the houses were demolished and grandad, along with many others, moved to Swainby & Danby rd. The friends they made in old parts of Stockton stayed with many of them. I’ve also found that many had Irish names my ancestors were mams side Murphy & Tippey, dads side Casey. Most of this was unknown to me until last year when I set out to find all I could about grandad Robert Casey, he died as a result of wounds he recieved on the Somme and died in 1939, so we his grandchildren never saw him no idea what he looked like but I know from his army record he was only 5ft 3" tall enough to be called one of the " Old Contamtables ". He fought at Gallipoli and France as did many a Stockton lad who also Joined the K.O.S.B. Please ask picturestockton for my e-mail if you can relate to any of this.

  4. I think my grandfather was Frank (Francis) age 11. In 1889 they lived in Snowdons Yard. They must have moved to Housewife Lane sometime after 1890. I haven’t found grandad’s 1st wife’s details but he married a second time to my grandmother Agnes Henderson from Edwards Row. Perhaps one of the ladies above is our great grandmother!

  5. My great grandad and grandad lived in Housewife lane, Ann. They were the Caseys. Francis Casey married Isabella (nee Lyons)lived at 9 Housewife Lane, the 1901 census showed Hannah aged 14, Frank aged 11, Mary aged 8 Robert (grandad) aged 5 & Elizabeth 3 born 1899. Elizabeth married James Gavaghan, they had a son named James born March 1929. Except for my grandad, Robert Casey, I dont know much about the rest of the family. I did know the youngest born, Jimmy Casey, my grandad Robert served in the K.O.S.B 1914-18 and was one of the Old Contemtables, wounded 1st day of the Somme, discharged from the army 1918. I think Frank married one of the Jobsons, would love to know about the rest, perhaps your great grandparents knew mine, all the best.

  6. My great great grandparents, Thomas a shipyard labourer, and Maggie (Mary nee Welch) Liddell lived in Housewife”s Lane in 1901 with their children, Thomas, 6, Henrietta and Margaret, twins 4, Elsia, 1, and Emily, 1 month. They were very happy to be living here as a family.

    • Ann Webster would your great grandmother Magghie Liddell formerly Welch’s family name have been Welsh a little earlier?
If yes I would love to be in touch as they may be a family connection.
