  1. The buildings are difficult to identify as this photo has been taken either before the ICI site had been completely developed or after most of the familiar surrounding buildings had been demolished. However I have a feeling that the building on the left is the CO2 Removal Plant and the other building the T2 Compression Plant of the Ammonia Works. I worked on the CO2 Removal Plant as an apprentice in 1958 and stayed there as a qualified Fitter until 1961 when I was accepted into the Drawing Offices. I remember my stint on the Ammonia Works with affection. Although the CO2 Plant was extremely noisy, with 20 steam-driven turbines making normal conversation impossible, the maintenance crew were the salt of the earth. I remember the Foreman Harry Fletcher, Charge-Hand Tommy Harle and all the other Fitters who endured the hard manual work without complaint and a wicked sense of humour. The building reeked of Ammonia and I recall eating my sandwiches at the work-bench with everything tasting of Ammonia. Still, it was a good remedy for colds.
