This photo is probably late 50’s. My father was the manager of the Co-Op butchers and worked there from about 1950 until the early 70’s. I was born in Poplar Court, behind the shops, in 1952. In those days all the staff smoked in the shops and all meat was cut for each individual customer and wrapped in grease proof paper. Across the yard at the back of the shop was a large cold store for the sides of beef and pork. My father could park his car on the cobbles in front of the shop every day with no problem as there were so few vehicles in Yarm – a far cry from today! In my youth I acted as a delivery boy for some customers, cycling up to Egglescliffe village and surrounding areas.
I remember the shops well, the buildings were bought by Kirkleavinton property development co. I have the workbench that came out of the butchers shop in my garage and a set of cast iron scales from the same shop.
