This is how it was in the 50s

These images are taken from a photographic record of the renovation work done to a selected group of houses in Alliance Street, Stockton in 1953. Known as the Stockton Test it evoked a great deal of interest across the nation. To read the full story of the ‘Alliance Street Test’ visit www.heritage.stockton.gov.uk

  1. This picture is brilliant, they way things used to be. Did the front get converted into a house after the shop closed? I”d be interested to see more photos of this part of Stockton during the 60″s. The Stockton Test seems to have been an interesting time!

  2. I”m afraid things went badly wrong for Alliance Street (and its neighbouring streets). All the houses are boarded up now and are due to be demolished. The problems started about 20 years after the Stockton Test and got out of hand in the late 90s. Ironic, given the national attention focused on the place in the 50s.

  3. For Barbara Denson, Alliance St is off Wifred St at the rear of Denshams Corner behind the taxi offices. Turn left at top of bank before travelling towards Oxbridge.

  4. I remember going to this ‘corner shop’ on Alliance Street for my grandma to buy 1lb of sugar in a blue paper bag.
