I have a watch belonging to my great grandad, he received this for 25 years loyal service (1952-1977)
Has anyone heard of, Willian Leonard Tweddle?
Hi I worked at Hunters The Bakers on the Team Valley , Gateshead in 1962. I was in the accounts department. No computers back then it was Olivetti Machines to add up.
Hello
Are you Thomas Arthur Jones sister? I am his grandson and saw his photo on your book cover.
Hunters Bakery is on Kingsway, Team Valley Trading Estate, Gateshead, Tyne and Wear.
My grandfather worked for Hunters – whereabouts in Gateshead would the bakery be? Also he suffered quite a serious injury during his time there are there likely to be any records of injuries/compensations?
We used to have a lot of roundsmen with horses and carts in the fifties. Bread; the Co-op vegetable cart and so on. The Ringtons Tea wagon looked a bit like this one, gold lettering on a black background, but with edging like a “John Player Special”. When the back was opened there were lots of drawers with different quality tea leaves in each. You ordered a selection which the driver measured out into your tea caddy with his little scoop. Once you had your two scoops of No. 3 and three of No. 4 or whatever was your choice, you”d mix the blend by giving the tea caddy a good shake.
I believe my Great Grandfather may have worked for Hunter”s Bakery around 1939 – 1949ish. I know its a long shot, but does anyone know how I would go about finding out if this is in fact the case? His name was Goerge Leslie Horner. Many thanks
Would this be ex-Councillor Fred Webster who has sent in this photograph? This brings back fond memories to me. I spent most of my Saturdays and holidays during my schooldays travelling on the various bread routes as a helper,on both the horse driven and later with the motor vans. I had the privilege of seeing much of South Durham and Yorkshire that way.
The photograph above originated from Oswald {ozzie} Holmes who lived at Norton, he was a roundsman for Hunter”s, later Sunblest, for many years, I believe he drove, and I may be wrong, one of the last horse and traps to work out of Hunter”s bakery in Bowesfield Lane, Hunter”s was taken over by the Sunblest group, later relocated to Portrack before it”s final move to Gateshead. In it”s hayday in the 60″s around 30 bread vans would operate from the Bowesfield Lane premises, (by this time it was only a disribution depot) delivering bread as far as Barnard Castle and Ripon, daily.
