This is a photo of a promotional card (size of a business card) for Voice Jubes by J F Smith & Co Ltd, Green Dragon Yard. The card was recovered from the building in the 1970s when the council were renovating the Green Dragon Yard.

I have a post card advertising Luton Powder insect killer which is sold by J F Smith of Green Dragon Yard Stockton. On the reverse of the card is a picture of north end high street dated 1785. I think this must have been from my grandparents, who had the allotment holders shop which I think was in Farrer street. Regards Gaynor
Smith’s was a typical local sweet manufacturers mainly of a fine range of delicious boiled sweets, black bullets and the like. One market stall was close to the Parish Church with boys and girls casting their eyes over the amazing selection trying to work out which were the best value in number, size and taste in exchange for their Saturday’s penny pocket money.
There is a family firm today in Halifax Covered Market with 2 stalls.
I have a directory for Stockton from 1936 which lists a James F. Smith, confectioner, Green Dragon Yard. His residence is given as Saltburn so he must have been fairly succesful around this period.
