    • Fascinated to find this reference to Bunny Wain with a photograph. Bunny Wain moved on from Westbury and later took up the post of headmaster at Haxby Road Primary School York in time for my arrival after infant school in 1962. He proved to be a very helpful and supportive headmaster from both my own point of view and my parents. Always keen to interact with his pupils, he was instrumental in my success in securing a grammar school place despite a lacklustre 11 plus performance. I made contact with him in 1988 to thank him for all his support long after his retirement. He remembered me and we exchanged letters. He was enjoying retirement and travelling extensively. As far as I know he never married, but spent many years with a partner. A school teacher who combined firm discipline with care and affection for those in his charge. I remain grateful to him.

      • My memories of teacher Mr Wain was of a nice guy. The school had a bus trip to Wynyard. I was in his class and he found I was not going. He paid the 1 shilling and sixpence for me to go. Next week I was in the corridor selling my birds eggs collection to a lad for 2 shillings. Mr Wain came along and watched. He took the 2 shillings and gave me 6 pence back.. He was a good teacher. I was in the school football team also. I will put photo on this site. Derek Brittain.
