  1. The Royal Train had left King”s Cross behind streamlined A 4 Pacific 60007 -now preserved in working order – late the previous evening and was stabled at Redmarshall on arrival in the area. The engine in the picture, 60147 “North Eastern”- most appropriate – was normally stationed at Gateshead depot but came from Darlington shed to work the train from Redmarshall into Stockton, arriving at 09.45.It then worked the empty stock to Redcar so that luggage could be unloaded in preparation for the Queen”s departure from the Tees on the Royal Yacht for a state visit to Sweden later in the day.The then Royal Train had an air conditioning system which relied on very large blocks of ice carried beneath the Royal saloons and in the train notices reference was made to the arrangements for replenishing this locally.
