I have a medallion that was given to my father, and indeed all school children to celebrate the said event, By the Mayor of Stockton L Ropner. On one side it has a facial image of George Stephenson, surrounded by laurel leaves the year 1825 and the inscription of who gave it.The other side is a bridge with what looks like an A3 hauling apassenger train. On top of the bridge is the Locomotion No1. Either side of the bridge the Coat of Arms of both Stockton & Darlington Councils And the wordings Railway Centenary 1825-1925.
S&D Railway Centenary Celebrations 1925 – The “Castle”was built around the Shambles and local dramatic groups, school groups and musicians, performed a three hour “Pageant of Stockton” for the thousands of visitors. The Shambles was both dressing-room and wings the event “The Castle” is visible in 3 of the 4 photographs
The cars leaving Stockton Station probably contained the Duke and Duchess of York as well as the Mayor (Leonard Roper) and the Town Clerk (Thomas Downey) and other civic dignitaries. They had arrived at the station in a train from Urlay Nook where they and thousands of other guests of the railway company had watched the procession of old engines, carriages and wagons drive past. After lunch at the Borough Hall, the party went to the original railway booking office in Bridge Road where the Duke unveiled a commemorative plaque on the wall.
