Summerville farm 1990

These photographs were taken during 1990/91 pre Co-op, Savacentre and Tesco and they reflect on how much the land has changed.

  1. The old farmhouse at Summerville Park on Durham Road is becomeing another eyesore.
If it doesnt get flattened soon its going to end up as a burnt out shell.
It should be made into a car park and the people travelling North could be saved the trouble of going right round the roundabout which at peak time is a nightmare.
What a waste of a big house.

  2. Wow I’m nearly 23 now and have fond memories of the old Co-Op. Yeah they pulled the roofed walkway down when Tesco took it over- I was a bit sad really. I remember jumping over those red pillars in the middle of it – there’s only one left, just a little past McDonalds, so at least there’s a momento of my childhood! I also remember the fountain very well – us kids threw money in it, and there was always a car on show in that glass foyer. The only things left of the original facade is the glass foyer, which is no longer accessible, and that lonely red pillar. I can’t believe that bench has been there that long though!

  3. The land around Summerville Farm has changed a lot over the last 18 years and the farm is now boarded up. The A177 road was a lot quiter then in 1990, now it”s a very busy road with shoppers going to Tesco”s & McDonald”s. The lonely seat is still there, although looking a little sorry & tatty in places. But still seatable, how many people have sat here I wonder. The roofed walk-way is no longer there and I remember the entrance to the glass roof hall-way and it”s coin-fountain, this was taken out when Savacentre took over from Co-op. The land to the right of the seat and sign, is now Mcdonald”s, with the old Priory garage in the background, where I used to go and get a gallon of pink paraffin for my Dad.
