  1. Anyone know who the 4th lad from the left on the top row is? It looks a little like my dad but I’m not sure. I asked him but he didn’t know or recognise any faces, he was born in 1962.

    • Hello, does anyone remember Charmaine and Marvin Hill who attended Hardwick School around that time? I would like to know or have an update on the teachers pupils etc. Regards Marvin Hill

  2. I went to this school at about the time this photo was taken but sadly don’t remember much about it. My family emigrated to South Africa not long after. Jean Raby, did you used to work at the Asda on West Row? If so we worked together and I never realised we had gone to the same school as each other. Small world. I am Karen Watson as was.

  3. I think this photo was taken in 1961 or early 1962 as i moved from oxbridge infants to hardwick infants in the summer of ’62 and am not on this photograph.I cant fill in many of the names but the 1st on the left, front row is Patricia Towns. Jean, I’m surprised you don’t remember her! We all went on to Grangefield together. Along with Joan Davidson and Andrea Elliott and Karen Nurk, who is 4th from the left on the same row as Jean.

Middle row, the girl in the middle is Susan Boult, she’s on the right of Anthony Ayre I think.

Not sure if they are on this photo but some of the names I remember are Brian Greenaway, Michael Fewtrell,Graham Highfield and Angela Kirton.

Went from here to Hardwick Boys G Stream Class as all seats at Grangefield were taken. Stayed on to 5th-year and moved on into Electrical Engineering with NEEB, CEGB Nuclear travelled the UK in power station construction and operations then worked in Russia, USA, SSA, Norway, Dubai, Oman, Iraq, Australia and West Africa (2003 – 2016). • Hi Brian

I was just talking to Andrea Elliott about you the other day. She mentioned talking to Paul Denning about a get together with some of the others we were at school with, but hasn’t heard from him since. I remember Grenville Hines too, and strangely, after talking to Andrea about never having seen any of you since we left Hardwick School, I saw Trevor Thompson in Stockton.
It’s good to hear you’re all still alive and kicking!

  4. If this is Hardwick Junior School, I was there between 1960 and 1964. I’m afraid I don’t recognise any pupil’s names other than Jean Black (nee Raby) – I was in the same year as your brother Keith.

The teachers I remember – Mr. Price, Mrs. Wright, Mrs. Irving (who I believe drove a Roller to school!), Miss Denton (she should have been in Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’!), Mrs. Mallaby, Mr. Holmes, Mr. Fitzgerald and Mr. Shepherd.

Mr. Price I remember as Headmaster really helping me when my dad died just before my 10th birthday.

    Ah….those days of innocence!

    • I remember Mr David Price as the best headmaster ever he had a strong Welsh voice and played piano in St. James Church. Mrs Wright was my teacher before I went to senior school. Mrs Irving was knitting and sewing and Miss Denton was my teacher when Stockton went dark in 1966 we were in wooden huts at the time.

  5. I went to Hardwick School about 65, loved Miss Tickly. Certain teachers would lock you in the cupboard for being bad but it stunk because we were always doing the milk turning to cheese experiment.

  6. How confusing the times and date of this photo are. Some pupils stayed at Hardwick Juniors and some were transferred to Harrogate juniors when it was first built. Memories of HARDWICK INFANTS SCHOOL Started their with Alan Clark 1960ish age 5 remember having a fight with Kathleen Finn and her sister Pamela, Mrs sharp (YES SHE WAS A STRICT TEACHER). I remember my class room was in the Black huts we had a corner with dolls and wooden cribs to play with, when I left I gave the teacher some hanckerchiefs. I used to make daisy chains sat on the grass out side the huts. I Transferred to Harrowgate Juniors; George Dobbing, Alan Spacey, Alan Plumier, Susan Russell and ME stood in a corner planing our band. Remember the canteen wasn’t up and running and we had to go to Roseworth School for our Dinner. Me and Susan Russell got the cane for standing on the step outside the main entrance to the school, Standing in the Hall at break time to learn my tables, Loved to be the milk monitor, Names I remember in my class – Peter Burns(very brainy), Peter Mansell (very brainy), George Dobbings, Alan Spacy, Susan Russal, Alan Plummer.

    • Was telling my hubby about Mrs Sharpe a few hours ago… Green beans on my dinner plate reminded me of her making me eat them at dinner time.. I can still see her boney fingers leaning on the table and I was forced to clear them… I threw up all over the table… Dunno if it was the fear of her or the taste of the beans…

  7. A number of us who left Hardwick sec in 1974 had a reunion in 2004 (30 years) and it was a fantastic night. I still see quite a lot of old Harrow gate and Hardwick ex pupils, including a couple on this photo.

  8. I did live in Wardley Close, in fact my Mum still lived there till it was demolished last year. I lived opposite Michael Arscott and John Cox and next door to Jackie Charlton. I remember Valerie Jones giving me a frog out of her pond and I dropped it and stood on it on the way home. We should all have a get together some time. Anyone fancy it?

  9. As mentioned in earlier posts it is definitely Hardwick infants, I would say end of term (july) 1963 as Harrow gate opened in september 1963 and some of the kids pictured will have transferred there after the six weeks holidays. Jean, did you live in the now demolished Wardley Close or thereabouts?

  10. The teachers name in the photo is Mrs Greenwell, but I can”t remember if it is Harrowgate or Hardwick Juniors. Miss Sharpe was definitely Hardwick ( I remember her well, she was the first person I was ever frightened of) The girls in the front row are from the left, Patricia can”t remember her surname, Wendy Gaurdhouse, her Mam was a dinnerlady,Karen Nurk, Jacqueline Charlton, (now married to a diamond mine owner in South Africa).I am fourth from the right on the front row and was called Jean Raby in those days. I remember Peter Mansell and Peter Burke, and also Tony Ayre who is 5th from the left in the second row. I remember most of the faces but not the names. Don”t you wish we could all go back and be six again.

  12. Peter, thanks for the compliments mate (born 1956, looks 5) I was born in 1955, Peter mansell was born on mayday 1956! I went to Hardwick infants from march 1961 until leaving for Harrowgate juniors in the summer of 1963 and believe the photo was taken about that time which would make Peter and myself about 7 . I”ve still kept my boyish good looks don`t know about Peter M!

  15. I can only remember two teachers from my infants and junior school days, Miss/Mrs Hutchinson, who I still see walking around quite regular, and a lady whose name I always thought was Miss/Mrs Screenwell or something similar. I”m glad to see from a previous posting that my memory of this name has been corrected, it was Greenwell. Is there a possibility that this photo could be a little later than the date stated, I”m not completely sure but I may be on it, and I was born in July 1961 in Wolsingham Close, Hardwick

  16. I must have attended Hardwick Infants in 1966. I have to admit I was rather a naughty girl in those days – I was told off by Miss Sharp and in my anger, pushed her and ran out of the class. I was told later that she fell in the waste paper basket. I remember the dinner ladies, Mrs Buxton and Mrs Halliday. I always remember getting sent to the headteacher (I thought it was Miss Crawshaw) and they had installed a buzzer system outside her office. I was so confused because at that age I didn”t know what the word “engaged” meant so I just went away. Probably why I got told off. The girl front left looks like my sister Christine Marshall but my mum reckons it isn”t although she would have been there in 1963.

  17. I believe photograph was taken in 1963 as stated in the caption, but it might have been 1962. It was such a long time ago, that I can”t be 100% certain. Definitely no later than “63 though.

  18. I attended this school between 1962 & 1964. I remember Miss Sharp and Miss Crawshaw. The headteachers name wasn”t Miss Dent as she taught in the junior school along with Mrs. Wright, Mrs Irving and Miss Hezaltine. Mr Price was the headmaster of the junior school. I don”t recognise myself or anyone else in the picture.

  22. I would have been at Hardwick Infant”s between 1961 and 63, don”t remember any faces on photograph. I remember the Black wooden huts and Miss Sharpe, boy was she a Teacher from Hell, a right nasty piece of work she was. Still I enjoyed the School days. I think the huts got burned down by vandals around 1970.

  23. I would have started Hardwick infants in 1965, I remember with great fondness some of the teachers, Mrs Whealden? who used to have a magic tin of sweets to hand out to the good children at the end of class. Miss Crawshaw who also used to do private piano lessons. Was never keen on Miss Sharp i can rememer her putting children in a cuboard if they were naughty also giving a sharp slap to the backs of your legs, she would get locked away these days. We always got a little bottle of milk with a silver top on and a biscuit every day{Abbey crunch} if i remember right. we always showed great respect to all the teachers. Was the headmistress called Miss Dent?

  24. Chris Davies – You are correct of course, it is Hardwick Infants. I”m getting confused in my old age! I”d heard Harrowgate Lane School mentioned on this site, and assumed (wrongly) that it was the correct name for Hardwick school. I always thought we moved up to the Juniors in 1963, but I must be wrong about that too.

  27. Peter – I”m afraid I remember few names or faces from this photo, except that I think the boy in the middle row, 4th from left is Alan Spacey, to his right is Tony ??. I am 9th from right. One of the girls in the front row is Wendy Silver. I can”t remember the teachers name, but I always used to think she looked like the Queen! I remember us infants being schooled in a black wooden hut until our school was finished. However by the time I left in 1963, we had moved into the new infants.

  28. Peter I”m sorry but I can”t recall the teacher”s name. It isn”t Miss Keating as she joined the staff about 1966 or so.When I joined the staff the Infants School building had just been finished and until the summer of 1964, when I joined the staff, the infant children were housed in the Junior School.
